Travelling with toddler

Travelling to Asia with little bub who just turned one. Hotels don't offer cooking facilities so in terms of solids, what should I do? Don't fancy giving her prepackaged food like Gerbers, Heinz all the time as its not healthy. Any suggestions on food? Also, any other tips as its my first time travelling with a young child.

Can you not take some frozen vegies, keep them on the plane with you in a cool pack with frozen ice blocks (the large ones not made from water) Then put in hotel room freezer and defrost with warmer. You could always ask the hotel if they could keep the excess in their freezer.

You could ask the hotel/restaurant to cook some vegetables, steam some fish etc. You can then mash/cut to the consistency that suits your child. Just remember to be very specific about not adding salt etc.

These are excellent suggestions. As a first time mommy, panic was setting so thanks for all these great tips. What about sterilising milk bottles? I noticed that Avent has a travelling bottle with refillable plastic bags. Has anyone used these before?

Mothercars sell drawstring bags with a sterilising tablet in so you all you need to do is fill up with water and put all equipment in! I have used them before and will do again in a couple of weeks!

Don't be too stressed re using Heinz jars as a backup. I had a very fussy eater who wouldn't eat home cooked food for weeks. My Australian paediatrician assured me that the quality of baby food like Heinz is fine because they do not add salt/sugar to the product. They also do a prediluted juice box with straw which is a great backup drink when travelling. It is 50% water and in a longlife container so no fridge necessary. Sold at PArk N shop. Last time I was in Aust (few months) they still sold the Avent plastic bags for the bottles - might be worth checking their website. If your bub is over 12 months do you need to sterilise?? There is a disposable bottle sold (quite cheap) - not sure of brand - seen it at Toys R Us.

I'm not sure how long your holiday is but Avent do disposible bottles as do some other brands. When i went away i used my own bottles and sterilized with tablets but i wished i'd spent the money and taken the disposible ones (didn't know about them till after the holiday) it would have been so much easier and a lot less stress.

Hi all, yes, sadly, this is true. I asked a saleslady & apparently Avent no longer sells the travelling bottle and disposal bags...I wonder why??

Adelaidemum raises an interesting point though because my little one is one year old now so do we still need to sterilise the bottles.. ? Hmm.. I am not sure really.. any mommies have thoughts on this? If I don't have to sterilise the bottles, that would be excellent because I can save a tonne off my luggage!

For interested mommies, I saw a cheap disposable bottle at Wing Onn by Playtex. I didn't buy it as my little one is quite fussy and is used to the Avent teats but its probably a good alternative. It was only $39 or so per bottle which is very reasonable.

The Australian resource for feeding babies etc is child and youth health. website www.cyh.com.au

Look under nutrition in the baby section and they have a whole section on sterilising.

I only sterilised my bottles and boiled the water until they were 12mths old. I then swapped both my children to cows milk in a bottle and then swapped them to cups (to help their teeth) as soon as possible. This was in Aust with a different water supply - so boiling here may be necessary all the time depending on whose opinion you listen to.

Have a good holiday!

The Playtex disposable drop ins are much better than the Avent ones were, but as you say, the problem is the different teat.

I used to use a Babytec travel steam steriliser. To be honest, it is not a patch on the steam setilisers that you'll be used to in your kitchen, but better than nothing. I just cannot bear the tablets, cannot get rid of the chemicals etc. The lightest option (if you can get access to a microwave) is the microwave steam steriliser bags. I prefer Tommee Tippee Steribottles, they are pre-sterilised, single use disposable bottles. Unfortunately, I have not found anywhere that sells the 3 months+ version in HK (Bumps to Babes have some of the baby ones). They do take up a lot of luggage space on the way out, but do not weigh much. I have yto keep getting stocked up from the UK though.

General advice is that you do not need to sterilise beyond one year.

I just bring my travel kettle and just boil the nipples and bottles and everything else.
