Sleeping on her tummy

I need advice from any of you who experienced this before. My 2 months daughter likes to sleep only on her tummy, I think she likes to feel any contact, either my breast or the matress, and also it releases her colic pain, as she always wakes up crying when she is on her back or side.I know all pediatricians and midwives disapprove, but i need to know if this can be of any harm for my baby.

Thanks to share your opinion

Unfortunately she has a really light sleep, so when I try to move her on the back or side she wakes up definitely! And I also experienced that besides the comfortness, she can sleep even 4 hrs if she is on her tummy!I feel the responsibility of this decision! Thanks a lot for sharing your comments!

My friend's babes (two of them) both had severe reflux and colic. The midwife said in that case, if the baby is in pain, then tummy sleeping is okay provided under supervision. That meant that naps were done in a way so that the mom could keep an eye on the baby...also meant that the baby was sleeping in the same room with her.

I had the same problem with mine. It is such a difficult situation because all you want is some sleep and for them to get some sleep and everyone is telling you how bad tummy sleeping is. Anyway, here are some things that I did. First of all I discovered she likes to sleep in the car seat because she is more upright so sometimes I let her sleep there - but as they said in a previous post you should limit how much time your baby is in a carseat so she really on has her day time naps in there and to get her to a deep sleep. Also I raised the end of cot by putting a small pillow underneath the mattress at the end her head is at - so once she is in a deep sleep I put her in the cot with her head a bit elevated and finally, I have one of those monitors that monitors their breathing so if all of hte above fails and she has to sleep on her tummy then at least if anything happens and she stops breathing I will know. Also, after about 3 months the colic tends to go away on its own so it is probably best to persist with back sleeping if you can until 3 months because it might settle by then. Anyway, good luck.

My baby who is almost 5 months old has also in the last 2 days insisted on sleeping on her tummy. If I try to turn her on her back she wakes up crying and flips herself back on her stomach. It seems this is the only way she can fall asleep by herself otherwise I would have to rock and carry her to sleep. I also bought a monitor that monitors her breathing, so that we can all have a decent nights sleep without checking on her constantly throughout the night.

I know with SIDS etc sleeping on tummy is not recommended - but all four of mine slept on tummy - all the time and still do as teenagers. If your cot has no bumpers so that fresh air can get in, and nothing else in the cot except a light blanket - you reduce the risk. (My babes were born before SIDS was a 'health risk" for babies so we were not told any different)

FEDE I feel for you and understand your concerns. My baby also likes sleeping on her tummy and i let her during the day and first thing at night when we put her down then after an hour i go in and put her on her back. Sh is 20weeks now so is rolling over of her own and last night or this morning after i got up to pump i checked on her to find her on her tummy so i rolled her onto her back and she promptly rolled onto her tummy again. I tried again and she rolled more onto her side and had her foot pushed up against the cot so i knew she couldn't go completely flat. We have a special mattress called a safe and sound. It's latex with holes throughout to help prevent suffocation. If you were to use this on it's own (no mattress protector or monitor) it might help you worry a little less. Two months is young and with coilc i understand how you bubs likes to be on her tummy. Have you tried some drops for collic?. I used some called 'rid wind" and they did the trick. Also try putting bubs on her back and gently pushing her knees to her tummy to help get the air out and when burping rub up more to the left side it really seems to help get the burps up more. I've heard the mattress monitors are great but you can come to rely on them greatly, althought once your daughter can roll on her own you'll should hopefully worry less. Good luck

Research has shown that babies who sleep on the tummy are at a much greater risk of dying in their sleep (known as cot death or SIDS). Cot death rates have decreased dramatically in countries where mothers have been advised to put their babies to sleep on their backs. The side sleep position is safer than sleeping on the tummy however, still not as safe as back sleeping.

To reduce the risk of cot death:

Please ensure your baby is put to sleep on her back only.

Keep your baby in a smoke environment and ensure she is not too hot.

Make sure your baby's face is not covered during sleep.

Seek medical advice is your baby is unwell.

So are we suppose to wait till are babies are 12mths before letting them sleep on their tummys? There is pleanty of info on how to prevent SIDS but i can never find anything on telling you when its ok. One has to assume that when your child can roll over themselves front to back then it's ok for them to sleep on their tummy but the SIDS webpage i looked at said SIDS is known in babies up to 12mths.
