administering medicine to baby

i have to administer 3-4 different meds to my 10month old and am really having a difficult time of it.

i have tried to mix it with some food she likes and feeding her that way, only succeeded in her not opening her mouth at all for anything

i have tried injecting little be little with the syringe but as soon as it's in her mouth, she gags and then projectile vomits the medicine, and what looks like mucus. i try again and the same thing happens.

i have tried putting a gerber star which she loves on top if a spoonful of the medicine or a mixture with the medicine mixed in, and she refuses to open her mouth.

i have tried to squeeze her mouth open to put the spoon with the stuff on it, in her mouth. she ends up gagging and just holding it in her mouth and then cough it out spraying me.

pls pls pls, if anyone can help at all. i'm almost to the point of wishing we could give her an injection. if it's not going in, she'll never get better.

the only hint I have is that when administering with syringe you need to make sure it is pointed right to the back (3/4 back) of the mouth into the cheek on one side and it sort of by passes the tongue/taste buds and they seem to swallow i better. If the medicine is really important speak to your doctor regarding alternatives (taste, etc). When my sister was little she had to take some antibiotics for about three years and at the time they tasted horrible an so my dad had a pharmacist friend make it up in peppermint and with lots of lovely sugar. They also had it in tablet form which later on my mum used to crush and put into empty (new) capsules which were new technology at the time. She was about three at the time. I feel for you as I can still remember the nightly debacle of it all.

There's a gadget out there called Medibottle (I think) and it's a small milk bottle with a syringe in the middle and while the baby is taking the milk you can press it in little by little and (s)he won't notice it. The only drawback is that the baby may not like a different teat.

thanks i'd like to try that! htough i only feed 1 bottle at night, the rest are breastfeeds so that doesn't totally solve my problem

I had this same problem with my daughter as a baby, in fact I still do, she still refuses to take medicine, and vomits after you manage to get it down her and she is now 6 years old.

I ended up having to hold her down and squirt the syringe as far to the back of her mouth as possible, it was traumatic but the only way I could give it to her.

There is also a pacifier on the market that holds medicine that is taken slowly as they suck it, do not know where it is available here though, sorry. The other option is to ask your doctor if the medicine is available in sypository form, I know it is not nice but it is much easier.

Good Luck, hope your little one is better soon.

I got mine from my pediatrician back then - Dr Eunice Wong who's in Lane Crawford House. She used to sell them but I'm not sure about now. Alternatively, you may be able to order it from www.medibottle.com, it looks like the ship internationally.
