I took my daughter to the swimming pool at around 3 months and because the weather was very hot, we went about 4-5pm to avoid the harsh sun.
We took her for her first dip in the sea (at Clear Water Bay HK) when she was around 6 months old.

we took our baby swimming at about 6weeks in a pool. She loved it straight away but we had taken her for a shower every night so she was use to water. She still loves swimming and we are just puting her head under now (she is 20weeks) We go swimming every week some times 2-3 times a week.

My 4th baby was born in water, and has been a keen swimmer ever since! ;-)

we take a napy and change of clothes down to the pool wth us. We don't use suncream (it's not recommended for small babies) we swim in the shade. Use a baby pool or if using the big pool try to keep your babys head out of the water so as not to get water in his ears if your worried about that.

There really isn't a minimum age for babies in pools or swimming. however my pediatrician advised and some books says at least 6 months higher b/c they at least a major bunch of immunizations done already. Although there is chlorine in the pool water.... there is slight risks of picking up viruses, and bacteria.
After swimming in the pool or beach, be sure to wash and rinse off baby's skin and hair well to rid of chlorine or saltiness from beach water.
Mine went swimming at 6 months, not really, just dipping in the pool, and he fell asleep swooshing around in my arms in the water..... with a floatie around him. It was quite a funny picture.
