Where do you change your baby when they become too big for the changing table?
Ideas please!
Thanks

we don't have a changing table...he's been changed on the bed with a plastic changing mat from mothercare since day 1...sometimes we do get pee on the bed but he's our baby, so that's ok!

So do you move all the 'implements' to the bedroom then - diapers, bins, wipes, cotton, bowl of warm water, etc....
?

Actually, most times we bring him to the sink and just rinse him off... but we have water sometimes too.
I guess we have this whole area set up, all organised, 3 bins (one for cloth nappies, one for garbage, one hamper for clothing) etc... I can't see moving that all to our bedroom...
*sigh* will have to figure this out soon - thanks for all your help!

Hello!
We had the same problem for #1 and #2 is soon to follow -- he's very rotund :) Anyway, we just change everyone on the floor now most of the time. (We're down there most of the time playing anyway.) We have children's foam matting (with the alphabet and #'s), so anything that gets on it just wipes/mops right off. Also, #1 refused to lie on his back to be changed at some point (around 11 months?), so we're pretty used to changing him while standing. Also, you can use adult incontinence pads under them while changing on any surface, to be safe. No need to move everything. Just yourselves. Good luck!

second Kooni - we just change ours on the floor. You could keep things in his room. I sit with my legs splayed out on either side of the mat and then change her. I also find a plain bath towel (maybe an older one) is a great way to catch flying pee - as it absorbs (and plastic doesnt) and so there is little to no mess.

I just thought it would eventually get hard on our backs to always change him on the floor - but I guess not, as you are right, we are on the floor playing anyway!
We use these waterproof mats for him to play naked on, they are great - like thin towel on one side and waterproof on the other. When we travel we use this as our changing mat with a hotel towel under for extra softness.
We get them at WingOn or other more local shops, unfortunately they have silly cartoons on them, but we have one with a giraffe that is nice. He plays on them every day during naked time, they are great. We can use that play area for nappy changing.
I wish we had a big counter in the bathroom, that would be perfect :)

Hey CRJ -
it doesn't get too hard. I try to make it a mini "stretch" time for me. I actually prefer it to bending over the bed (because I could actually change on the bed too since it's in the same room) I just plop my self down and it seems easier to me...

My 2.5 year old will still get on the change table after a bath (with legs over the side) - I find it much easier on my back than bending down to a bed.

We change on the floor too, and have for eons. I have one of those waterproof mats by Kooshi (B2B)down to protect the floor, it just folds up and lives on top of the wipes box. It's probably just like yours from Wing On, just no cartoon characters :-) We have a carpet in her room, so she's perfectly comfortable, but mine grabs a pillow for her head anyway. If your floor is harder though, IKEA has a sort of foam thing for changing with blow up bumpers around the sides. For some reason, we used to travel with that...I'm still not sure why. I mean it's comfy for baby, but too bulky to travel with (what was I thinking?)
I think one reason lots of people move to the floor is that their little one gets too wiggly to be safe up on a changing table. But I think they need to learn to stay put, not wiggle all over, not roll to their stomach, not get up and run around the room....yours is young yet crj, but just wait, it'll become a big game. We do have fun with changes, lots of giggles as she runs to hide from me, but I don't chase her down, I don't hold her down, I've never wrestled her in place, I don't change her standing up...in fact I don't even touch her until she's on her mat with her bottom toward me and her pillow (which she insists on) under her head.
I honestly wouldn't have bothered with the changing table topper in the beginning if I'd known how easy floor changing was.

the pram is perfect for nappy changing i think...just do it real quick before the pee starts flying.

Great ideas everyone.
Because we are using cloth nappies, I do like to be near the bins (one for the nappies, one for the garbage) Maybe it is different with disposables. Or maybe it is just me being obsessive-compulsive :)
I think we will try on the table for as long as we can, but we are noticing he is trying to roll over on the table and grabbing at everything these days! Once it gets too 'dangerous' on the table, we might have to move to the floor.
When we are out and about we change him anywhere, but at home we like to be a bit more organised.

Hi crj,
I'm a very organised person but realsied after a while that with babies, you just have to throw it all out of the window (after breast feeding, tried boiling the milk bottles for about 1 day then reverted to the microwave!).
I don't mean routines...etc but you find that things are thrown at you a lot and you have to do so much improvising.
Trying to maintain "a place for everything and everything in it's place" when children are involved is stressful for all concerned.
We did the change anywhere with the plastic mat and also kept wipes in every room. We got our second one to become accustomed to being changed standing up which is so much easier, especially when we're out.
My only advice would be, try to relax, there is no perfect way of being a mother or raising a family...go with the flow.

thanks so much for the post - I am not actually stressed about this issue, more just curious as to what parents do when baby is larger... and trying to make it easier for us :)
The changing with legs over the side of the changing table, on the play mat, and changing standing up all sound good to me. I can picture him standing up, as he already likes to do that now.
Now if you want the list of things I am stressed about.... that is another story!

hahah....aren't we all stressed out first time moms? i know i am, everything is a potential crisis for me...my husband tells me to relax and only worry if something actually happens.

Wheelymate -- you're funny :) Yes, everything is a crisis with #1 and husbands bear the brunt. Poor guys. Poor #2 -- He can eat an entire post-it, and I don't even flinch. I'm almost happy he found something curious to amuse himself. Bad mother!

Everyone is a first time mum - even with many kids- as kids grow up there are always firsts - first 15 year old, first runaway, first time coming home smashed and sick, first time break up with the boyfriend / girlfriend - it will never stop - sorry...you get over the small stuff like changing nappies - this is just to help you prepare for the later years.....

LOL... Yeah, being a first time mom is really a stressful experience. Now that she is 1 year old, I just laugh at how stress out I was during the first few months... Actually, it only took for me to understand that mothering is a lot about Common sense and trusting your instinct and your baby. :-D
