We have been taking our aby swimming since 4-6wks and use to hold her by placing her chin in our hand between our thumb and forefinger. Now she is older and she can swim quite well she dosen't like us holding her there any more. I have been placing my hand flat on her chest since but it's harder to keep her head out of the water. She has been doing so well and i'm not sure how to hold her now and help her swimming progress. Any ideas?

Can she breathe underwater yet? If she can, you can let her swim freely over a short distance... length from wrist to elbow then increase it gradually. If she can't teach her how to hold her breath. My partner and I started it with bath time, first with a handful of water then a cupful and we started taking him into the shower. He now can hold his breath. Also, prepare him for the anticipation... saying 1, 2 ,3 and at 3 pour the water. So after your bub is familiar with holding her breath, try dunking her in for short durations first... and then increase it... before you know it, she'll be able to swim! Of course, swimming is best learnt with a professional. I am merely an amateur :-)

The way the swimming teachers used to teach my daughter to breath underwater was by blowing bubbles. She would ask the children to take a deep breath and put just their mouths in the water and blow bubbles. The next step was to put their faces in the water and blow bubbles and then their whole heads. All the time trying to make it as fun as possible. Now my daughter swims underwater better than I do!

I dive her under the water she knows how to keep her mouth closed as we blow on her face. We also have been doing this for some time in the shower. When she dives she kciks her legs, not really sure i would want to let her go though. I forgot to mention she is only 5mths.
