Unfortunately I couldn't understand the check out girl fully, but I seemed to be charged a $1 donation for plastic bags yesterday - anyone know what is happening? I appreciate the sentiment of trying to save the earth, but want to know if there will be this $1 charge everyday.

Currently just the first Tuesday of each month. Not all stores are involved. Your 50c per bag "donation" goes to Oxfam.


FYI, there may be a plastic bag tax introduced in 2007.

Hmm, I wonder what controls there are in place to ensure that all the $1 collected actually find their way into the charity's coffers instead of helping the restaurant's (e.g.) cash flow.

Charities give receipts. Restaurants which give to charities will have receipts. Customers who are concerned about this can always ask to see the receipts.
