It's about 180 kms from Hong Kong to Guangzhou, that's quite a commute. The train from Hung Hom in HK to Guangzhou takes about 1 hr 45 mins to 2 hrs, plus the time it take to get to Hung Hom station.
The express train from Shenzhen to Guangzhou takes around one hour and booking is required.
FYI, there is an American International School in Guangzhou if you didn't want to subject your husband to a long, long commute.

And the school has a leaflet on raising teenagers in Guangzhou.

There is the Shekou International School, which goes through to 11th grade.

BTW, why are you so set on Shenzhen? It's generally considered a less safe city than HK or Guangzhou.

BTW, where do i get the visa for china? I am leaving los Angeles this Thursday?
Please support our advertisers:
The Chinese consulate in LA is at:
3rd Floor, 500 Shatto Place, Los Angeles, CA 90020
BTW, it takes about 4 working days for a tourist visa. Or you can pay an additional urgent fee of $20.00 per visa for 2- or 3-business-day processing.
If you are coming via Hong Kong you can get one here. Here is the information from the US Consulate's (HK) website regarding this.

Hi Thanks for the information. I will be in Hong Kong for 2 weeks before I travel to china.
I will get a visa there. Thank you for the website. Are you from Los Angeles?
Please support our advertisers:
No, from England. Been here for 20-odd years. Know the LA consulate as was travelling with a colleague (HK passport holder) who was knocked down on an LA street. Checked out where it was in case needed but fortunately my colleague was walking wounded.
Enjoy your visit to HK. It's a great place.

The school in Guanzhou is very large and has many facilities and many Americans. We have billeted a couple of kids for sports events in HK and they have said good things about the school. There is alot more space there as well. It might be better for your family to live together in China as there are facilities in that region to support you.
