I have a Philips DVD recorder, bought in HK some time ago, that makes DVDs OK from original videotapes, DVDs, and TV.
However I have other videos that have been recorded from TV, or from video cameras (for example, home movies), and when I try to convert these to DVD the playback on the screen just stops and starts and it is impossible to record a DVD. In short, the recorder handles 1st-generation material OK but not 2nd-generation.
So, two questions:
A) Is there anything I can do with the recorder I have to make it less sensitive and enable it to do what it's supposed to do, i.e., convert those tapes into DVD?
B) Failing that, does anyone know a reasonably-priced commercial outlet that can do this?
I guess there is also a third question: does anyone own a fairly new DVD recorder where this problem has been overcome?
Thanks anyone...

The problem could be a sync loss issue. The DVD recorder is having trouble to sync to the lousy/weak time base which is common with VHS. Try using a different VHS machine. I doubt the problem is the DVD recorder.
Or the other solution is to use a professional service who have a timebase corrector. But I have no suggestions for who does that. Sometimes photo development shops offer the service though.

Thanks. Maybe more recent DVD recorders are better equipped to deal with this. I understand what you're saying, though it would seem that something designed to "copy anything on to DVD" would have anticipated and overcome this. Anyway, as life's problems go, this is not a big one.
