Has anybody moved from Midlevels/Central to the gold coast??? My boyfriend and I are considering the move and i was wondering if anybody had lived at the gold coast and what is it like. It appears very relaxing and bice but is it too far away in reality and is it boring. I do work alot and wonder if the travel from Centarl to the Gold Coast is just too much to enjoy it. Please someone help me i don't wan to leave me wee flat for something and regret it. Thanks

Nice flats and a few good bars/restaurants.Good for w/e but can imagine it wearing thin after 3 months.

The real problem is if you like partying in LKF after work.

It'll be a real drag hauling yourself back to the GC when you're half-cut,knackered and/or want to carry on......e.g. disco bay

I don't have any kids and i work 6 days a week 14 hours a day in central, this was the reason that i was thinking of spending my day off away from it in a more relaxed enviroment. I agree with you about the bus factor this was my major concern about it. Good point about the not haveing to commute, i passionatly hate the London Underground. Think you may be right, was just hoping for a balcony that i could afford.

I live in the Gold Coast since 2001 & love it because my kids can get tons of friends at any time of the day.

If I had no children, I would never live there.

Stay downtown.

I did forget to mention that my boyfriend works at the airport so there fore it would make his journey shorter but he works better hours than me. This is just so hard. Why do those that live there like it so much???

Sarah. I lived there for 2 years with my boyfriend when I first arrived in HK. Initially I thought it would be great, because of open space, bigger apartment etc. After 2 years I hated it. The bus takes at least an hour, and after midnight it only runs every half hour. If you are not early in the morning, you need to stand on the bus for 40-60 minutes. There is only limited 'western' style restaurants / shops out there. I spent all my time commuting back to HK Island to visit my friends, shop, and go out to nice restaurants. If you want to experience greenery on the weekends - why not just go hiking on HK Island?

These are the worries that i have. What is the closest town like?? This is such a hard descion. Is there anywhere else that anybody knows that is the same thing but not so far away. but not Discovery Bay.

You would go to Tuen Mun town centre, which has a lot of shops and restaurants. But it is always very crowded and very very local (which is fine, but I guess I am guilty of wanting more western style, or at least access to it without an hour bus ride / $250 car fare). If your boyfriend did not work at the airport, I would suggest Sai Kung, but that's too far away.

How about Conduit Road in Midlevels, facing the peak. You leave the city behind you, you see a beautiful green mountain and its quite...

So sad I moved and face the harbour now (including the city jungle, the noise etc...)

Depends on your budget.

I already live with a mountain view in mid levels it is lovely but i just find it dark and would love a balcony, my budget is not massive, under 15,000.

Lou88 :I would love Sai Kung but unfortunatly i don't think you can get much further from the airport, we have already crossed that one off.

Hi Sarah,

I have lived in midlevels and then the Gold Coast, now Tung Chung. My husband is always travelling so we need to be near the airport. I am fortunate enough to work from home. I loved the Gold Coast but do appreciate having the MTR at my fingertips as opposed to the bus. People say Tung Chung is polluted (I haven't found it so) but in reality HK is a small place so if Tung Chung is polluted you can bet everywhere else is too - but perhaps they don't have a pollution monitor in the neighbourhood. The rent here is incredible value for money with great facilities. There is a reasonable size expat community too. Just a thought.

Thanks

We looked at places there and they are amazing value for money but then after coming around to the idea my boss told me that he had signed up for a place in Tung Chung that same weekend. And although he is a good boss i spend 14 hours a day 6 days a week with him and don't want to run into him on a sunday so that one is counted out but thanks anyway

SarahB> There are four main developments in TC. Which one did your boss go for? If you pick another one you won't be bumping into him at the clubhouse.

The main reason I came to HK was that I commuted to the City of London from the sticks (2 hours),worked 14 hours a day like you and lived for the weekends when I could get to the countryside where I lived.

However, that wore thin because the commute made me so tired i could not socialise during the week and the w/es became very short.OK there were cows and thatched cottages and a country pub.But that's boring after a while.

The real benefit to me of Asia generally is that you can work and play hard during the week, get a taxi home for 20 HK$ and then got to an Island or Sing or Taiwan etc etc to get a break. That commuting will seriously test you during the week.By the time you get to relax at home its time to wake up and get back to the office.I'd think very seriously if I were you (But I'm not).

One alternative may be to join a club in town and enjoy the pool, bars, sport at w/ends and in the week ??

Have lived in Gold Coast for 9 years and love it. It all really depends on what you want our of your free time. If you like hanging on the beach, around the pool and sitting outside at the restaurants or bars then this is ideal, it's like being on holiday. If you want to be in the heart of everything with loud music and numerous bars, forget it.

Hi, have you thought about moving to Pok Fu Lam? I used to live in Mid Levels and didn't want to be too far from Central or the bars! Pok Fu Lam is perfect, have a look round Sandy Bay area. A lot of the apartments have a sea view and rentals are not that bad in terms of cost and space. Good luck!
