It depends in part on whether it is Jan or April, but generally, I'd head west from Colorado - the Plains States are a wholesome place to live, but not a fascinating tourist destination.

In terms of national parks, Yellowstone can interesting in winter with the contrast of hot pools and snow. The southwest can be picturesque and Vegas offers both child and adult entertainment if neon and magicians with tigers appeal. And then you have so many options on the coast from LA attitude to Seattle laidback.

I would recommend not driving in the mountains any distance in January (April you might still run into a spring storm, but you will probably be okay).

Coming from Washington State, I am very partial to the Northwest (Washington and Oregon) though it would be better April than in January. The scenery like mountains and Columbia River Gorge can be stunning, both Portland and Seattle are interesting cities, etc. Depends on whether you'd rather travel around or sit by a pool. The NW is not so good sitting by the pool.

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Very family friendly. There is always Vegas! Seriously, it's surprisingly family friendly as well.

Disneyland has to be on your list with a 2 year old! It is on my list everytime I go to the states - with or without kids.

San Diego Zoo is also worth a visit - and sea world.
