What to do with 21 month son

ORIGINAL POST

My son is 21 months old. I work full time. I would like him to get more exposure to native English but most "preschools" seem to start from about 2-2.5 years old.

Can anyone suggest anything?

I don't want to pay someone $500/hr to sit with him and speak English. Are there any student teachers on holiday here, students who I could hire for a couple of hours a few days per week?

Any other bright ideas?

(Suggesting that I stay at home is not an option)

Who looks after him now? Do they speak english?

You could try the PPA in Borrett road where he could go along and mingle with other kids and adults - but someone would have to go along with him.

My helper looks after him but obviously is not a native speaker.

Blitzing, my daughter has been in playgroup in Int'l kindergartens since 17 months. Her English is so advanced, now in learning center, (almost 3 years old now), they placed her in K2 English classes.

I think the Playgroups in kindergartens with NET are the BEST option for working moms.

Some suggestions:

1. Enrol your child for Woodlands Montessori Summer Fun programme (12 months - 7 years). Located on Caine Road. Pay for 2 weeks at a time. Fab teachers - I know, my son's been going there since 25 months old. We pay just under HKD3 000 per month.

Tel: 2549 1211 or visit www.woodlands.com

2. You can get a part-time native English speaking nanny from Rentamum for about HKD150 per hour. Give your DH an afternoon off / allow her to catch up on chores while the nanny takes your child out on a trip / activity.

Tel: 2523 4868 or e-mail rentamum@hknet.com

3. Train up your DH so she's better able to stimulate your child. The YWCA offers some great courses for helpers. For example -

Child care course for helpers

Hand-on workshop "training your DH to support your child's educational, social and emotional development"

Helpers and kindergarten / playgroup

English for domestic helpers

Hi, where are you living? I am on the Southside and am thinking of starting a small playgroup - helpers or mum/dad to accompany the children. I have a B.Ed (early childhood) and a B.Teach (primary). I am a native English speaker with 2 chn of my own. One is 3 and the other 15months. I am hoping to get it underway in sept. I have a great outdoor space with a trampoline, sandbox and house as well as ride on toys. We also have a great sunny room for the "classroom". If you would like to discuss it further, please call me on 93863070 during the day.

Kind regards

Sara
