Moving to SG - what hospital/doctor...

C-sections : of course they are but if talking specifically about elective c-section, not every doc will do an elective just because it's the patient's preference i think.

Hospitals for delivery: Mt Elizabeth and Thomson Medical Centre are popular choices with expats and locals alike.

Docs: There is a recent thread under "pregnancy and fertility" about docs in SG, you may wish to refer to it.

Insurance: Sorry, can't advise on that.

Good luck!

Hi we moved from HK to S'pore when i was 12weeks pregnant so i can relate to your concerns. I went on a recommendaton to my Dr, Dr Joan Thong at the Raffles Hospital. We found her to be open minded, confident and very easy going.

I think you should see where your living and then find out from each hospital when/if they do tours of the maternity wards and go and look. Most Drs work at certain hospitals only so if say you liked my Dr but wanted to give birth at Thompson hospital you'd have to make a choice It's a good thing actually as then the dr's aren't spreading them selves to thin. I loved the Raffles it was so quiet and there was never a time when i couldn't speak to a nurse or midwife. We had a private room so my husband could stay with me over night. When our bubs had to stay in an extra 3 days due to jaundice we stayed in a serviced appartment just down the hall form the nursery. The nurses would then call us and say she was ready for feeding and bring her down to us. This was a relief and so nice to be close to our daughter.

If you want a water birth, home birth or a birth not on a bed you will have few Dr's to choose from, if you are interested in this type of birth let me know as i can put you in touch with an agency who would know Dr's who did do this. Although i think even those Dr's were doing it less.

C Sections are done here and quite regulary as there are a lot of Chinese here so having your baby born on auspicious days can be important to some of the Chinese community.

Insurance, well my husband's company covered me (and our daughter once born)but not for pregnancy i was just speaking to a friend today who has just moved here and it is the smae for her. Maybe you could ask the HR department if pregnancy/birth is covered if not i'm sure you'll find they have an insurance company they can recommend. Try to do it asap so you can get covered before you have a baby, ours was around $8,000.00 but i had epidural, suction, forceps a private room and we stayed a little longer than most people. We actually thought it would be a lot more and as the hospital and staff er so great and our daughter was ok we didn't care.

S'pore is great for having children as it's a much more child friendly city than HK. Nice and flat, elevators in the shops and pleanty of mothers rooms Don't get me wrong there's still pleanty of stairs around and cars are expensive here so it's a little difficult shopping with a pram but you get by. I order most of my food shopping online. Let me know if you want any more info

i forgot,

gleneagles is another popular hospital.

ok, about insurance : i wasn't working so i didn't have an employer to cover me. my husband is british working for a local firm and they didn't cover either. but we did ok because our overall bill wasn't massive and i offset it partly via my central provident fund medisave account. i know a few expat friends who gave birth in singapore who weren't covered by their employers but they used a UK insurance bupa (not sure if spelling is right) to cover. but from what i understand, you need to be insured way before you are pregnant.

agree with perthites about her comments in her post...especially alternative birth options are not done by many docs so that narrows your choices too in terms of choosing a gynae.
