I need a personal mobile phone and would like to know which service provider does the best deal for someone who only has minimal (say no more than 20 mins/day local calls) useage and occasional international calls?

Sunday has a pretty good deal for new sign ups....

I think it is $50 a month for 1500mins...

I found Sunday coverage not very good. Just switched to 3 and they have proved so far to have a much better coverage. They also have a great deal (for an extra $38 per month unlimited) calling IDD. It includes USA, UK and OZ to landlines only.

For such a low usage, why don't you get a prepaid card and top up once in a while? I believe they start at $100. Most service providers offer this, but I have only used Smartone and China Unicom (purchased card at 7-11). Smartone has good reception, but if you need access in China, China Unicom automatically transfers the HK number to a China local number so you don't pay the high roaming fee. Domestic calls in China are only RMB(or HKD?) 0.70 per minute. Can't beat that.

I also don't use my phone much, and I have a Smartone plan that costs $60 or so for like a 1000 minutes a month, plus cheap long-distance rates, caller ID, etc. I get a pre-paid card for $100 every month and this covers it easily.

Moonriver, I'm glad you put those quotes around "'free NEW phone". I just found out that you pay for the phone up front and then you get a discount each contracted month of service that I suppose eventually pays off the phone. ugh... please
