I want to have my maiden name changed to my married name on my Hkg I.D card.

Does anyone know how long I can expect to wait for the I.D to be ready?

Same for my U.S passport. (?)

Last ques...

If my Hkg I.D is not ready (or passport) by the time our baby is born (in 4 wks), will the the birth certificate have my maiden name on it?...OR will proof that we're in the process of changing my name be enough to have my married name put on the birth cert?

thks

The ID change will not take very long at all. We did it last year and it was a week at the very most. Cannot comment on US passport.

Hi Bumblebzz

Irrespective of whether or not you have your name changed on your passport or your HK ID card, the birth certificate of your child has your maiden name.

ok...i said maiden name, but it's actually my ex-husbands last name. (I kept it for my son's sake, for various reasons)

I said maiden, so I would'nt have to get into all that...

Anyway, I want my current husbands last name only on the birth cert.

So now what? I'm sorta getting conflicting answers here...although I do appreciate the help.

Just a thought... but your maiden name is on your own birth certificate.

Get the process going for the ID card and the passport. You only need one or the other (plus the marriage certificate) to register a birth - and you have 42 days after the birth to register.

Yup, you're probably right about my maiden name being on there.

I guess the important thing is that I get going with the name change asap.

You can still name your baby whatever you like ..even the last name. But if you want it to look "right" with everyone matching then you will need to go through the process stated above.

This is'nt about the baby's name...he will definately have my husbands last name.

This is about what my last name will be on the birth cert.

I'm ok if my Maiden appears on the birth cert.

I just did'nt want my current last name (my ex-husbands) to be on the birth cert.

I've only been keeping my ex's last name for the sake of my first son. But he's grown now, so I want the change.

thks all

I think the most important comment somewhere above is the fact that you have 42 days in which to register your baby. (Actually that's only the penalty-free period - you can do it later. Check the Immigration Dept website for full details.) That gives you something like 10 weeks to organise things - plenty of time. Good luck.

Yup 42 days after birth and if you dont make that the penalty is very small.

Hi Bumblebzz

I've checked my children's HK birth certificates. Their HK birth certificates only require my maiden surname. In other words, only my maiden surname is stated on their birth certificates. For more information on this, it is probably best to contact the Hong Kong births and deaths registry.
