Air Ticket

ORIGINAL POST

Three weeks ago I paid in full for a ticket & was given a formal chopped receipt, the ticket to follow. After many calls the travel agent now says (one day before travel) I must fly via a differnt airline & a non-direct route, no reason given. The flights I wanted are full (I checked)

What should I do?

Are you on a firm booking or on the waiting list?

If you are on the waiting list, why are you complaining?

No, I have a confirmed flight (according to the receipt) both ways - that is the point!

Have you contacted the airline with your booking confirmation number?

FYI, the receipt may only be for payment. The travel agent levy (and compensation fund) is only for tours, i.e. transport and accommodation or other tour ticket.

If you are confirmed your booking, you should as Claire suggest check with the airline what happens instead of just listen to your agent.

What I finally did (as I mention I had checked with the airline directly & found I had no reservation) was contact the 'Travel Industry Council'. They took up the case immediately & the agent offered a different direct flight at no additional cost; they had refused to do that just talking to me.

But still I wonder what is the correct thing to to do if they never came up with the alternative flight ie book another ticket elsewhere & claim back the difference at the small claims court, claim for emotional distress etc etc.

You cannot claim for emotional distress through the small claims court - that's comes free with HK travel agents!

Sounds like the agency messed up the booking and thought you didn't know your rights so would take whatever they gave you. Guess the answer is to have the Travel Council on speed-dial and contact them in front of your agent.

BTW, was there any particular reason you didn't book the flight over the internet?

Probably booked via a travel agent because it is usually cheaper than the Internet in Hong Kong.
