When your baby is sick - do you take a sick day from work or do you take an annual leave day from work?

What about if your helper is sick and cannot care for baby that day?

Thanks

do they have childcare/sick leave in HK?

my ex-colleague used to take that as her kid kept picking up germs from childcare and i think when she exhausted that, she had to use her annual leave.

Baby fine now - just wondering for future!

I already work from home - but if my helper was sick I would not be able to work, so I was curious what most people do.

I am sure that the right thing is Annual Leave, but that is so limited compared to Sick Leave I am tempted to just take the later if necessary.

Also depends on the attitude of the employer.

Yep, HK is not very kid-friendly I'm afraid. With any luck you have an understanding employer.

hey if you are working from home, sounds like your employer is already pretty flexible...why don't just check with HR?

Personally I would take a sick day. My boss would not approve so I would lie. My boss has no children and so it is my children who will be supporting her in her old age. I think it's justified.

My company requires a Dr cert. for any sick day. One of my employees started taking excessive time off when her baby was sick and brought in peadeatrician Cert's, pretending they were for her. Soon HR picked up on this ( and me for signing them off!), and she got a warning. They made it clear she has to use annual leave, but it will be frowned upon if it is too short notice. Because, obviously, you can plan when your child is sick. Anyway, my two cents- check whether you need a DR. cert. in order to validate the sick day. Otherwise, I personally would maybe do half and half.

So, outside Hong Kong, parents can take sick days from work when their children are sick?

Think it's different in the UK as employers cannot ask for a sick note for less than 4 days sick leave (at least when I was last there - may have changed). So basically you can call up and say you (or the whole family) are sick and cannot work.

No, not the case in Canada. If your baby is sick & you take a day off, they will deduct from your vacation day. I work for a US company & they only give us 5 sick days a year anyway. Other than that, even if you have doc certificate, they will deduct from your vacation day.
