this morning, i went into bub's room and found him awake and in facing the opposite direction of the cot from how i put him down last night! he is certainly more active. so:
is it still safe to have his mobile hanging over his head or should his cot be completely clear?
is it time to lower the cot already?
he is only 18.5 weeks.

You don't need to lower the cot until the baby can pull himself to a standing position. Same goes for the mobile. Is it safely out of reach? Could the baby reach up and tangle himself in it? Leave the cot at the highest position for as long as possible.... it's hard work bending down that far to lift baby all the time. If you are worried about the baby ending up underneath the covers now he is more active, use a sleeping bag like a grobag (available here in HK. Not sure about Sing.) then he is safe from getting caught in the bedclothes.

that's the problem, he's already in the grobag!

Hi Wheelymate.
I don't think you need to worry.
Your baby is only 18.5 weeks, right? At that age, I think musical mobiles are still okay. Your bub won't be able to reach it.
You won't need to lower your cot until he's able to support himself. Ie. Pull himself up to a standing position. Once he's able to do this, make sure you quickly lower the cot. We kept putting it off (until the weekend) and one fine day, she fell off the cot. Luckily she was okay, otherwise I would never forgive myself for it. Mind you, I only left her for less than half a minute while I filled her tub with water.
Some people put cot bumpers to stop the bubs from hurting themselves when they move. However, I kept mine clear of everything. I read a mother saying that she'd be happier with a child with broken limbs (that will heal) than to gamble suffocation. I thought that advice suited me so I followed it.
Grobags are great. They have some really nice summer ones too. I bought one from SEIYU but depending on the weather (if it's as hot as today), my little girl will sweat in it (even with the air-con on). So now I just let her wear long sleeves and cover her with a blanket with breathing holes in them (you can get them from Mothercare).
