I’m guessing if I purchase alcohol over the internet (say whiskey from Scotland), that I would incur import duties upon its arrival in Hong Kong. Can anyone confirm this? I’m sure it’s the case otherwise every man and his dog would be doing it.

To my understanding, the customs duty may only apply for commercial imports (could be wrong though). In any event, I am sure that you are allowed some quantities duty free.
My suggestions: Call Customs and Excise Dept. One thing to say about HK authorities, they are usually very helpful and will give you the right infos.
