Hi- does anyone know how to dial cheap calls from a HK mobile to a US mobile?
Thanks!

For mobie, I use a phone card. The best one is the "Dragon" phonecard. It is red card with yellow stripe on the bottom end. Sells in denomination marked $50 or $100. On $50 you can get about 4.5 hours I think
SO, basically you will be using up airtime minutes plus the phonecard.

My understanding is that skype calls to the US are now free. But for those who can not live without their cell phones, skype is not an alternative.

Have you tried www.jajah.com ?
It's quite different from Skype, in that you only initiate the call from a web page, and then your phone rings and you are connected to the other party using a regular phone.
Need to register both phone numbers for it to be free.
I've only just started using this, but so far so good....

I talk to the US for FREE every night via Google Talk Instant Messenger which is also free to download and use. I spent $10 HK on a microphone because my old laptop didn't have one already installed.
Certainly not as convenient as a mobile phone call. But then again, in this country where everyone broadcasts their phone conversations to the entire train car, I'm okay chatting away in my private space. As a plus, I can focus on the person I'm speaking to (what a concept nowadays). And we can send pictures to each while chatting and respond immediately.

I have tried a few different things but Skype is definitely the best. It costs 1.7 Euros a minute to the US and unlike Google Talk, the other person doesn't have to be on the computer -- you can call any phone. Call quality is decent as long as you have a reasonable internet connection.

To be quite frank, SKYPE is not good for making calls to a landline/mobile. It uses your computer as the server therefore they cant control the quality...
