They must be going to deregulate landlines or something soon, as I went into PCCW to do a few things - one was to inform them that I was moving and I needed our three landlines to move with us - they told me it was $300 per line to retain the same number I mumbled something about how expensive this was - the sales person then mentioned something about a contract and if I sign on I can move for free.
Upon investigation, this contract can be from 30months to 12 months, and while you are under this contract you get to move once for free. But not only that - you get gifts - the value depending on how long you sign up for - for my three landlines to be signed on contract I got a DVD recorder (30month contract), a new impressive house phone (21 month contract) and a Sunday sim card with 550 free local mins a month plus 100 IDD mins a month for free for 18 months (18month contract). So if you are planning on hanging around HK for a while longer and plan to move locally in the next few years , want to save some money and get some free stuff get yourself down to the nearest PCCW store and check it out. These deals are not on their website and they have examples of the gifts in the store - other things are a DVD stereo (???) an air purifier, a comfit slimming belt, a really sharp chopper and kitchen scissors, a couple of pillows and a mens razor.
We thought it was really funny - we were probably going to stay with PCCW anyway, it was going to cost us alot of money to move and yet when it all came back - it costs us nothing to move and we got all this stuff!

Oh- well the sim card is a good deal - I don't have all the stuff, so it was a bonus for me!

how much was the monthly rental cost?
Please support our advertisers:
Same as the normal rental cost that I pay now - it is $110 per month. The contract includes unlimited relocation fee waiver for the time of the active contract.

Because of competition from other providers like Hutchison who actually offer a better deal for a landline at around $30-40 cheaper per month. If you multiply by, say 30 months, your DVD recorder (without hard disk) has cost you around $1000, but you are contract bound and have penalties if you terminate early.

And you can just negotiate on the monthly line rental - I pay HKD80 for PCCW service...

beachball, did you get any freebies? how long was your contract?

Too bad..just thought I would share - we were not going to change landlines and no i didn't negotiate - didn't know it was an option - just have been with them for 12 years and it has always been the same....just thankful that it is much cheaper than it used to be. It is none of your business what we need 3 landlines for - just thought i would share what I thought was something good in Hk and now you have all made me feel bad about it when nothing would have changed in my house if I hadn't have moved.....it would have cost us us $900 dollers just to move our landlines- talk about paying alot for nothing - at least with the 'extra' money we may be paying for our 'freebies' we actually have something at the end - and with it we can get rid of one of the cell phone plans for about 18months and save money on the many IDD calls we make. (Yes I do use Skype and 1507 as well but sometimes you need to call OS when it is not as convenient to use these things and free is better than something) So swings and round abouts....I still think we end up about the same as we are now and not more out of pocket.

No I don't work for PCCW. And the reason we never looked at another carrier is that we needed to keep our numbers - not sure you can do that if you keep switching around.

Thanks for the info dimac4!! What a great deal, we are moving house soon too and need to take our existing number with us, so I'll be sure to ask about the deal you got. Enjoy your new goodies.

Well I am glad that someone may benefit from my information. Rather than accuse me of being a patsy.
alices - you need to make sure you go down about a month before you move.

Hey, Dimac4, I hope that this experience has not soured you from giving your great advice. As I live in Sai Kung I have benefitted from your advice over the years.Hope you are not moving far
Please support our advertisers:
No - still in Sai Kung.
Oh and there are other reasons we have stuck with PCCW - we have always found the service to be excellent - whether it be line repair, questions answered or phone directory. Always prompt, on time and useful.

To all those who need to know (or can't understand)why we have three lines....
1. personal calls to/from friends etc
2. Broadband connection line for our network (used to be a dedicated fax line for a business)
3. a dedicated number that is given to my husbands employer for calls regarding work - the calls are screened to ensure they do not impede on our daily lives. It also has an answer phone and is useful to have a 2nd line in the house with 3 teenagers living here. And it is a fax line connected to the computer.
Happy now???
We have evaluated whether we do need this many lines and it is a yes to make everything run smoothly!

Because we want it - why should it bother anyone else..we are the ones paying for it..it is cheaper than a bottle of wine which we don't drink, and cheaper than smoking cigerattes that we don't do..so let us quietly have our vice and addiction to phone lines!
Man, it was easier being in the closet than having to rationalise and defend our position! That's the last time I admit to an alternative lifestyle!
