Foodstuffs taken to UK?

I understand that the UK Customs are now using sniffer doga at the airports, similar to Australian airports, to detect food being smuggled into the country. Are there particular foodstuffs which are banned and others which are allowed? I was planning to take char siu, lychees and stuff back in my suitcase. Would I have to bin them on arrival at the airport to avoid presecution?

No meat products from outside the EU. Lychees should be ok if for personal use and not exceeding 2kg.

Here is the UK government website on personal imports:

FYI, there have been several incidents of people taking bushmeat into the UK which could be very dangerous, for example monkey meat from Africa which could carry the ebola virus.

Don't know if it was imported sausages in 2001 (or whenever) but outbreaks of the disease have been linked with the importation of infected meat and meat products.

Do you remember Hilary Swank was fined NZD200 for taking an apple into New Zealand? Some countries have very tough laws.

Australia's rules are also very strict, and farcical though it may seem I recall the days when I used to regularly travel the Hume Highway and you were banned from bringing fruit into Victoria from New South Wales! I thought that fruit fly could easily cross the border themselves without having to htich a ride on someone's apple. Not sure if anyone was ever stopped, but the signs (and penalties) were there for all to see.

Many thanks to you all. It's very useful to know what we can and cannot do.
