The Australian school does NOT have to provide access for new expats - however, they are given a priority when enrolling.
Re ESF - they do start high school really young - 11 years old - as they have only 6 years in the elementary school and 7 years in high school. They may want to look at other international schools as they have a bit more flexibility with regard to the ages - ESF doesn't.

Some children can still be 10 years old when they start year 7 in high school at ESF - if they are born late in the year this will be the case. ESF is flexible in the case of a child already in thier schools - however with a new student I doubt they will be as dimac4 says. If your friends 10 year old was born in 1995 then they will go into high school year 7 in 1996 then year 6. For your information year 7 is the year that has the longest wait list and as I understand it - is very long and your friend would need to know where they are going to live and have an address before they apply. Year 6 I understand has shorter waitlists. Unfortnately the long wait list situation for year 7 seems to be the case in all schools. I am sure she will find something, however it is likely that it will not be straight away - for a good school anyway.

In the uk the you always go to secondary school at 11 even if your birthday is near the cutoff, they work from Sep 1 to Aug 31st. But here ESF uses Jan 1st to Dec31st, so anyone born in sep - dec will go a year ahead of what they would be in the UK, so many children start secondary here at 10. But if your friends birthday is Apr then he would fall into the same as UK so would start at 11. Pennypots is right this years yr7's will be 1995 born, if he's 1996 he will go into yr6.

On the question of whether the Australian (International) School or the ESF have to hold places for ex pats, the answer is NO. But, as mentioned already the former might place you on a priority list. I don't think there's anything like that with ESF who have more than enough applicants already without having to give priority to newcomers from overseas.

TC - just to let you know that ESF do give priority to Native English Speakers which would be the situation in this case. A Native English speaker would be given priority on any ESF schools waitlist. For example they would be given priority over any non native English speaker who had been on the waitlist for a long time.

Thanks for the enlightenment. But might still not be enough for what the original poster was looking at. I think if ESF is being considered seriously the ongoing squabble between management and teaching staff needs not to be swept under the carpet. It often doesn't make for a happy bunch of campers.

Despite the overblown, as you put it TC "squabble" between management and teachers, my experience is that the ESF gives FANTASTIC teaching and value for money. My daughter who is 7 has just finished primary 3 at Bradbury School and has loved every minute of it. Even though she is one year ahead of where she would be in the UK, she has been absolutely fine with it. The facilities and teachers are great, and the organisation is much better than most international schools I've come across - and remember the ESF is not for profit, unlike most international schools. So ALL the money goes into the teaching and facilities.

jross - I do believe that the squabble between teachers and management needs to be cleared up as soon as possible otherwise parents are going to start getting fed up with it - however in regards to the rest of your post I could not agree more. Very well said.

Great News! I understand there has been some sort of compromise and teachers have agreed to participate in after school activities once again. What a great bunch they all are, well certainly the ones I have come across.
