I've been told I have to pay for the repair to a broken air conditioner in my apartment, and I'm wondering if this is right.
I may have been lucky with past landlords before, but I don't think I have ever had to pay for something, if for example the toilet stopped up or a light was broken. I'd understand if I was responsible for breaking something, but I don't think I should have to pay for repairing things that break out of regular wear and tear.
Can anyone tell me if I am legally right in my belief, and if so, are there are any websites I can look at and show my school so they understand it is either their responsibility to pay or the landlord's? (By the way my landlord has been really delinquent with the bills lately. We even recived a notice from a lawyer before, probably in regards to collection of back rent.)
I really appreciate this. If I am in the wrong, then I will pay, but there's something about this practice that just is not sitting well with me.

I would have thought that the owner retains responsibility for repairs to fixtures etc. Wasn't there anything in your agreement or employment contract where it covered the housing bits?

All it really says is that the company will provide the housing, or provide a $2000 housing allowance should we want to move elsewhere. It also says we are responsible for utlities but that's it.
