I'm off on holiday for a couple of weeks and need to keepy my work pc open for access for others to use whilst I'm away. I have some personal financial stuff on there which I do not want to be accessed. Can I password protect certain folders/files, whilst keeping others open? thanks.

Files can be password protected.... click on save tab of the file & then click on Tools>>General options & type password to open/edit [incase of Microsoft office files]
Folders cannot be password protected, however, you can HIDE folders....i.e.
Right Click on the folder you want to hide
Go to Properties
Select "hidden"
Before you jump with joy...hold on...there's just one more thing you need to do...
Open Window Explorer
Click on Tools > Folder Options >View > Select "Do Not Show hidden files or folders"
Then Refresh....voila...
not the perfect way...but works for me...

As Sidsinh pointed out (indirectly) and you picked up - the hiding and unhiding of files and folders is very (too) easy under XP. The password facilities for MS Office programs were also pretty weak not too many versions ago. I don't know what the situation is now, but my guess is that if MS uses it, it can be cracked. Foolonahill recommends copying to a flash drive and deleting the original files. You need to WIPE the original files, deleting simply changes the 1st character in the file name (so it is invisible) and those files can be identified and recovered with the appropriate utility programs. I guess the question is how paranoid you are and how truly sensitive is the information that you want to keep secret. If it is really important, do a bit of web searching for a WIPE utility and use that. And when you get back start researching PGP and other truly secure security options.

Are the other users using a separate login? If so, you can encrypt you files so that only someone logged in as you can open them. Right click on the folder or individual files, choose "Properties" then "Advanced" and tick the "Encrypt contents..." checkbox.
