I have a new HK Chinese helper who comes to assist with domestic work. On her second day, she has carelessly broken a bodum coffee press (Price HK300). She has asked me to deduct the amount from her salary. What is the normal practice for occasions such as this?
Puzzled...

I agree with Fasan, accept that accidents happen and don't deduct money from her.
If she is always breaking things then you may have to have strong words with her but she was probably so nervous on her first day that this accident happened - she will be really upset because she would have wanted to impress you with how good and careful she is.
I don't know anyone who would deduct a helper's money because she broke something.

Thank you for your comments fasan, TanyaH and green. I agree, I guess it's not fair the deduct any money from the helper. Though, she was all in all very careless and unproductive, which made me feel that I should deduct a small amount from the salary. But instead, I think I should look for a new helper.
BigBob, you are absolutely right. I have in the passed jammed the copier, printer, fax machine (haha... you name it...).

And I am very glad you call her helper, better for their dignity.
