Hi all, do I need outfit specially designed for breastfeeding at all? If yes, where to buy?

You can buy special tops in all the maternity places, I should think, but I didn't use any. A lot depends on how you feel about displaying your post-baby stomach in public... Mostly if I was going out and would need to feed the baby I would wear a vest/camisole-thing underneath a looser top which I could pull down so keeping my stomach covered (also it was winter). Or you could cut boob holes in the same vest (but make sure that you don't wear it out...). Basically, I was just too cheap to buy any more ugly clothes after all those maternity clothes. I think there's a HK website selling reasonably priced b/f tops, but don't rememember the name right now.

I never used one. I just wore t shirts which were easy to pull up. I recently discovered these breastfeeding aprons which means you don't need to get any special top but can use an apron like covering to breastfeed without exposing any of your private bits. I LOVE mine - never thought I would want to lug around yet another bit of paraphenalia but I have found mine great.

B2B sell the vest tops with nursing bra built in, perfect for this climate. Just unclip the strap and you're ready to feed. Have bought a few of these and will wear with a linen shirt on top.
Also have a few stretch jersey tops from M & S which I have been wearing as maternity tops. They are cross-over tops so you can pull to one side when you need to feed, will wear these when I need to b/f also.

I'm conservative...I do mind exposing any private part...esp in HK where BF in public is still not as common. I am due in late Oct so it will be much cooler. Most of the maternity clothes I am wearing now won't fit the weather. Can't imagine pulling up a knitted top in public....
hkchoichoi your apron looks really cute. Where did you buy it?

i'm pretty bashful myself. That's why I love the nursing aprons. www.gracemama.com has a lot of different types of fabrics - most very cool and sort of funky. you can order directly from them. i'd choose a lightweight one for HK regardless of the weather - one of the cotton ones instead of their velour options. They are a smaller boutique website right now - so if you email them i'm sure they'd be happy to send to you in HK.

Just started breastfeeding and I am living in the camisole tops that Vulvic described above. A friend got me some from www.glamourmom.com as a gift and I love them so much I have just ordered another job lot. They come in lots of different colours and look just like camis I would wear in the HK summer anyway. When the weather is cooler, they would work just as well under a button-down shirt.

But I couldn't bring myself to pay US$39 for a vest. Perhaps I will go to Sham Shui Po and get some nursing clips and customise my own tops. Perhaps I could sell them here.....

Go ahead geiboyi, and i'll be your first customer ;-)
It looks really nice, mayafox, i don't see the price from the internet, is it really US$39 each?
Hkchoichoi, there's no pic for the whole thing, is it just an apron, that you hang in your neck? similar to ordinary apron? what's so special about this? thanks.

For the nursing apron -
it's wider and bigger than an apron (to cover more of you and your baby.) Perhaps the best feature is this bit of boning/wiring at the top of the apron which allows you to peak down and see your baby while he or she is nursing.
knowing HK, you could probably get someone to make it for you really cheaply if you found some fabric you liked. The only tricky bit is the boning portion at the neck part.
But it's one investment and then you don't have to spend any money on any other tops. YEAH!

Geiboyi, if you do, can I be your distributor? :D

Yeah -- the glamourmom tops are not cheap, but I have been breastfeeding for two weeks and I have been living in them so they seem worth it to me. Geiboyi, if you get your own line going,I would be your best customer!

Ms Nappypooh - I'm working on something else for you... but maybe I will extend my project to clothing...need more hours in the day, though.

Hi Hkchoichoi,
Sorry to bother you with my questions, i'm convinced to get this apron so i won't have to buy lots of tops.
Which model did you get - union st., robertson blvd or the chelsea? it doesn't say what's the difference between the 3.
I've emailed them to check on shipping cost, it's not in the net too. Did you have it ship to your country or here in Hk? how much did it cost you?
Nicher - do you want to order too? i don't think it's available here in hk.

I had mine shipped to the US and my mom brought it to me in Seoul. But I am very that they would accomodate your international request at a slightly elevated price for shipping.
the only difference is in the fabrics. you should just choose the fabric design you like. The shape of the apron is not different in any of the collections. I would just recommend that you not get velour as I thought that would be too hot in most case scenarios. (unless you want a heavier one for airconditioned situations.) I have two -both in cotton and i found it perfect for both airconditioned situations and nursing outside on breezy days.
Have they emailed back? I found them really prompt with customer service and questions.

Hi Honeypie, if my memory is correct, you are also due in Oct right?
Yes I am thinking of ordering one too but prob won't do it that soon coz 1st of all, I don't know if I can successfully BF - Some of my friends for some reason couldn't express their milk so failed to BF at the end. And 2ndly, not sure how long I'm going to BF that justifies the whole thing...
Would like to check out the shipping costs and lead time though. Would you pls share the info once you get their reply? Thanks!!

Hi Hkchoichoi,
thanks for the info again, no feedback yet as i just sent them an email this morning ;-) Is there a tie at the tummy area, like an apron? Correct me if i'm wrong with my visualization - you just pull up your ordinary top and hang this apron and your tummy/breast area, including the baby are all hidden?
Hi Nicher,
Yes, i'm just one week ahead of you. I want to buy and do everything now, as i don't think i can order later, nor open my computer and surf on what to do. I'm determined to BF (and praying that it will be successful), as i've said in my other post, i don't even have bottles as i don't consider formula, and brainwashing my mind that i can do it. IF in case, we failed, then it's easy to sell it later since it's not available in HK. I find that i can save with this apron - around HK$300, than buying lots of nursing tops.
Have you bought a BF pillow?

Hi Honeypie -
No tie at the tummy area. Just a big piece of fabric that you can arrange in any way with the convenience of not having it fall (in the way a blanket would) and being able to peep and see your baby (also more convenient that a blanket would be.) I hang it over my neck, grab my baby, tuck her under, arrange her and myself under and then lift up my shirt and rip oepn my bra - voila - BREASTMILK AWAY!
I didn't have a nursing apron with my first one, and decided on a whim to use one with a second. I actually was sort of opposed initially because I thought, MORE STUFF to carry around. But it is light, rolls up easily and SO many people in Seoul have commented on it's convenience. I mean, Seoul has a lot more places for breastfeeding than HK does (I was pregnant and had my first in HK) and I found myself wishing I had the nursing apron back then. I could have just plopped down on one of the seats in PP and breastfed anywhere. As it is now, I just stop in the middle of a place where there is a seat in Seoul and breastfeed where it is even LESS common than HK. (less than 10% of the women who give birth breastfeed and for sure, none of them in public.)
As for breastfeeding, I'm a huge advocate and a believe if you want to do it, you will do it. It's a lot of hard work - really difficult if I look back on it in the early days. Just trying to get everything right - but in the longer run, it's MUCH easier than bottles. (all that sterilizing and washing and stuff.) Less to carry around (just your nursing apron and your boobs) and far more convenient in terms of warming up a bottle (you are at a perfect temperature already.) All in all, in terms of mobility with you and your baby, a amazing convenience.
You can do it - breastfeeding is natural but not easy. But 100% of the women I know who WANTED to do it, did it with success, although for some it took up to a month to get all the rhythm and stuff sorted out.
My second, was put into the NICU and she was not allowed to breastfeed when first born. I STRESSED OUT about it because I was so sure that she would reject my breast and stuff. I got discharged, got home and would pump like crazy for my baby with the hopes that she would take my breast upon coming home. I even wrote on asiaxpat for a number of different pointers and tips - and you know what? She did just FINE. (she missed out on my colostrum though.) So don't you worry - it's going to happen for you too!

They sell the breastfeeding aprons/bibs in Bumps to Babes in HK. Kushies brand, in the aisle in the far left-hand corner together with face cloths etc. Although I must say I only used mine once - didn't find it necessary. I feel it's less conspicuous to just go ahead and breastfeed, which most people don't even notice, rather than raising a flag to announce what you are doing.
I can see they might be handy if you have trouble latching on, or a fussy baby who keeps bobbing on and off the breast.
The one item of clothing I miss when breastfeeding is dresses. They have some nice ones on www.motherwear.com but their international shipping charges are ridiculous (minimum US$40). Worth looking at if you have friends/relatives in the US who wouldn't mind posting them on.

Thanks HKCC for your info.
Honeypie - I don't have a 'BF pillow' but I did buy a U-shape pillow from Mothercare which prob serves the purpose.
I'm determined to BF too. But because I work I don't prob won't need the apron during weekdays. So it'll only be useful on weekends where I carry the little one out. I agree with you that I can resell the apron to someone else if I don't need it at the end though...

Thanks hkchoichoi for the encouraging words on BF, i have a few friends who gave up after 3 months as it's tiring accdg to her, one even didn't give colostrum at all, i don't blame them, to each her own. But i prefer to talk about BF to friends who had done it successfully so i will be encourage to do the same.
Thanks for the tip :-)) that it's available at B2B, i'll check it out. I don't have a single top for nursing, it will cost $100+ minimum for each nursing top, so better to have an apron.
I'll let you know Nicher if they replied how much is the shipping cost.

I wasn't suggesting you buy expensive nursing tops instead, just use normal T-shirts that you can lift up which don't expose much. I sometimes drape a muslin cloth over my shoulder whilst latching on because that's when most flesh is exposed. It's nice to have one of those nursing bibs/aprons while you gain confidence breastfeeding, but once you have done it a few times you might find you can do it quickly without exposing much flesh, or only exposing flesh while getting the baby latched on.
I have another suggestion for breastfeeding in public in the early days: watch out for when your baby is waking up and mouthing that they are ready to nurse, then put them to the breast before they start crying. This will help to avoid attracting attention to yourself.
