Hi Everyone,

I have ran out of time but my mother is turning 60 this weekend and I have no present - she is very difficult to buy for too and doesn't want jewellery or watch.

Please help! (my budget is about 10K so please don't suggest anything hugely expensive).

Thanks!

Is she here with you or in your home country?

Would she like a spa weekend or a short break at a nice hotel? Or something boring and practical, but she could do with it (e.g. new washing machine or whatever)? Or, as she was born in 1946, do some quick research on that year and, if she's interested in coins or 'collectibles' from then, you could perhaps source something relevant fairly swiftly. Google '60th birthday gifts' for inspiration, and good luck!

A spa weekend.

Shopping spree at her favourite store.

Season tickets to the opera, etc.

Sponsor an orang-utan, baby gorilla, etc.

Hot air balloon ride.

Parachute jump.

A goat, a camel, a donkey, train a teacher, part of a mango farm, clean water supply (Oxfam Unwrapped)

Depends what kind of person she is...

Thanks. She is in HK at the moment but leaves on the night of her birthday. I would like to give her something to keep - any experiences or opera tickets are best to buy for two which is not an option for her.

Idealy this would be a memorable present...

A small gesture... but check with the airline to see if they can arrange a cake (or something), or allow one to be delivered for when she's on board.

A ticket for her to return to Hong Kong, if she's not already a frequent flyer.

The thing is you can't give her an expensive gift to carry in case she gets stopped at customs...

Difficult, isn't it? Claire's idea of airline ticket is nice. Is it important that you physically hand her the present on her birthday? If not, does your mum have a garden? What about ordering a fabulous tree and a lovely teak steamer chair for outdoors so she can lie on it, look at her flowering tree and think of you? Long-lasting things that would commemorate her 60th. You could give her a kind of voucher-thing on her actual birthday so she knows she's getting them.

John Lewis, Debenhams (UK) sites might have gift ideas other than jewellery or a watch.

Maybe a really nice handbag if she's into that sort of thing?

If she can sneak it back, a beautifully painted decorative display plate; piece of sculpture; a posh tea-set; a painting from 1946 era or an antique from Hollywood Road?

Bloody extra difficult!!

I love the idea with the tree as she loves her garden - how on earth do you order it though? She lives in Sydney.

And something from Hollywood Rd - what a great idea!

Thanks a lot!!!

Along the same lines as Claire ... what about paying for an upgrade for her trip home? Can do on air miles if you have any? (Unless she is already flying 1st class??)

Just wanted to thank you all - ended up buying a lovely antique vase from hollywood rd - she absolutely loved it. Didn't get around ordering the tree for the garden - seemed too hard to order it without actually seeing what you are buying. :-))

Well done. Now just make extra sure that it's VERY well packaged for the trip home. I bought a couple of porcelain vases for a Canberra wedding present a couple of years ago - and by the time I had packaged them they were HUGE. Qantas went the extra mile by allowing me to take them in the cabin (and then stored them somewhere special for me) on account of their fragile nature.
