Hi, we are considering going the public route with baby #2 and are considering giving birth at the Pamela Youde Hospital. Anybody here has given birth there and what had been your experiences? Is hubby allowed to be in labor room with you? Are they pro-b'feeding? etc., etc. Thanks!

I gave birth there- not a bad experience. Hubby allowed in labour room, but sometimes has to leave just as other woman gives birth. ( There are 7 rooms- 6 are twin, only No 7 is private). Luckily, I already knew that and requested Room 7, so hubby and I were together the whole time. They are VERY pro- b/feeding. Infact, they do not allow you to formula/breast pump unless you absolutely insist. Food is awful. Showers- there is a public bathroom type room ( like old school showers). There are also 2 private shower/sink/toilet rooms, lockable. I used these. The nurses get you up every 2 hours through the night to b/feed, and you all have to traipse into the nursery- they do not allow the baby to be brought to you in bed. Actually, its better than it sounds, standard european hospital activity. Visiting is 4-8 daily. They are extremely strict- no kids. You can go outside the ward after 8, which I did, and sat on the plastic seats outside for as long as you want, but baby cannot go with you. All the babies are security tagged and they bleep if they go anywhere near the main door.

The level of English is very good. It cost 100 dollars per day, plus 50 admin fee. Bargain.

Oh, take earplugs, eyemask and all your own toiletries and nappies. They provide nothing other than formula if required. Maybe the first nappy.....pm me if you need to know more.

Thanks, Phoenix. That's really helpful!

When you say that they are strict about NO KIDS... does that mean that my son will not be able to visit and see the baby at all while we're in the hospital (even if you are in the private room)?

The one private room is labour/birth only, they whisk you out of there pretty fast afterwards, and onto the public ward. The post natal ward is quite big, and is divided into around 6 rooms of 6 beds. Visiting in post natal is restricted to 4 people. Your son will not be allowed into the delivery room( even though private), I think its just hubby. They might allow him into the ward, afterwards, just the one time. After that, he won't be allowed on the ward for visiting at all, he would have to stay outside and you go out to him ( but with no baby!). I know it seems a hassle, but its not for a long time. They really are quite strict, I questioned this as I had a visitor with a baby, but they said the risk of infection was too great and would not allow it. If you want your hubby in the labour room with you, then unless someone sits outside with your son the whole time, I think the chances of him being able to come into delivery room are few. I have seen western women in there, sitting outside in the corridor eating pizza with hubby and other kids. This is a great idea to spend some time with them AND have some decent food.
