I'm Asian, living in Guangzhou, I get sunburned easily, therefore, I'm so scared of the summer sunshine, because of the high UV, especially after the seaside holiday, my skin become black.

Every Chinese friend look at me as if I was a victim which made me depressed. At first, I don't care much about my changing complexion, however, my parents and closed friends sugguset I should get whiten quickly!

I know, in their eyes, tan is ugly, more ugly than those pale white ones. And I'm so clear of myself that my complexion can't change so fast.

One of my European friends said I look more sexy and beautiful after sunburned, he was tell his real feelings.

But how can people have so opposite views of ugly and beautiful?

I see many Caucasians make bold to the sun as they want to tan.

Here I have two choice, buy some whitening product and get white; or just let it be......

Friends, what should I do?

It should matter which way you would prefere to look, its the culture with your family and friends to want to look white(which i personally dont think looks nice, but i am a caucasian), If the sun is shining im the first one outside getting a tan as i think a tan looks healthy and makes a person look well where white i think the person looks ill.

Agree with raincatcher - you need to decide for yourself what complexion you're most comfortable with...if you feel prettier with whiter skin, then minimize your exposure to the sun and you should be okay. Try not to use any skin-whitening products...they are pure evil and would NOT do your skin any good due to the chemical effects they may have :)

Growing up I spent an insane amount of time on the beach and as a result, I looked almost African as a kid. My family and friends used to tease me to death about it (I'm Chinese after all) and eventually it just got to the point where I just hated my skin and was so ashamed of it...then as I got older my skinny-dipping days came to an end and I gradually became a lot fairer after a while. Problem was, I was so used to having dark skin that I ended up heading back out trying to get myself a tan again - I was getting so pale I was turning blue! So what I have now, at 25, is olive-ish skin thanks to my lefover tan, although I'm often asked if I'm Singaporean or Filipino!

Sometimes I mistook some Chinese as Asian because they are quite dark and noticed after coming to Guangzhou I got darker myself so I use a Kanebo SPF112 PA+++ sun guard all the time, even inside the house as we get the sun all day.

Whitening, the dubious ones consumes time and money and can be quite dangerous as mentioned above.

Keep skin spots-free and clean by regular facial, moisteuriser and drinks lots of water. Be proud and think positive about yourself and your achievement.

if the UV is high in Guangzhou, you need to get sunscreen-not for vanity purposes but to protect your skin from cancer.

Don't be bothered by what your friends say. No need to get whitening products etc which is a waste of money.

Taps-- aren't Chinese Asian too???

I think what's important is being comfortable in whatever skin color you have. For me, the best complexion is one that is clean and clear of blemishes.

Its just sad (and scary) that some women take it to the extreme for the sake of getting a sexy tan-- baking under the sun for long periods, dismissing the knowledge that they are increasing their risk of skin cancer by doing so.

having a nice sunkissed tan and a sunburnt skin are 2 different things altogether - one's attractive, the other one just painful for the person and let's not forget the cancer risk too.

but between fair and tanned skinned, it's really up to you...ignore what everyone else says about tan being ugly, fair being pretty, etc etc....

I hope myself to be white, however, my complexion is looks like wheat...it takes a long time and a lot expense to be white just a little, so tired that I want to give up.

but my boyfriend always says, u r so black that I can't find u if u fall into a pit, which, hurt me a lot...this time, how I wish he was that European guy, (just kidding)

Some people will never be happy with their own appearance. We all worry about our bodies, but we should worry about keeping it healthy, not so much about making it lighter/darker/bigger/smaller.

Unfortunately there are just too many hot women in the world and not enough hot men, so that's why they can afford to be picky and over-critical. I get a bit of criticism from men saying I look too butch because I do exercise and have muscles. Funnily enough though it's only from men who are unfit themselves. My male friend from the UK used to always say how beautiful I was, even if I put on weight. After he moved to HK suddenly it was "gosh you're so fat" and then when I lost weight "you're getting so muscular you look too butch", or "even if you lose weight you'll still be ugly anyway". Eventually I said "oh well, just because there are lots of fat ugly men in HK with beautiful girlfriends, you needn't be so smug." Then he shut up and stopped picking on me so much, and I decided to start focussing on the positive people around me rather than the negative ones.

During a conversation at a party (just to emphasise it was not a consultation), a plastic surgeon explained that 10% of wrinkles are caused by facial movements. The other 90% are caused by sun exposure.

I have younger friends who look much older than me - they are the "sun worshippers". This confirms to me that a tan today is wrinkles tomorrow, after all what do you get when you tan skin? Leather.

I remember reading that any sunscreen over an SPF30 is basically useless and also we must remember that our body needs the sun in order to give us Vitamin D, vital to aid the absorption of calcium and to promote bone mineralisation. Without it you get grittle bones, mishapen bones, etc.....

I also read that a stupidly high percentage of Chinese women died last year due to Vitamin D defiency and one of the causes was the fact that they dare not let the sun touch their skin due to becoming 'dark'.

So let's put this all in to context, the sun is a healthy thing just be careful and use in moderation. Sensible eh!

The thing you have to be aware of with sunscreens is vitamin D deficiency. It's estimated that some 25% of Australians suffer from vit D deficiency.

The good news is that our bodies are very good at making vit D from sunlight so you don't have to spend too long in the sun. From the Cancer Council, NSW:

+++

Just 10 minutes in the sun on most days of the week in summer, 15–20 minutes in spring and autumn, or 30 minutes in winter, outside peak UV times (10am-2pm or 11am-3pm daylight saving time), will usually give you enough vitamin D.

Always protect yourself from the sun when the UV Index is 3 (moderate) or above.

++

According to the HKO website, the UV index went above 3 between 8 and 9 this morning. So get your 10 minutes in early enough as you should be ok.

This position statement is from the Medical Journal of Australia. It's a growing concern for some parts of the community.

cara> I plaster on the SPF 30+ so I do wonder about a vit D deficiency. But I'd rather stick with the sunscreen, a daily multivitamin and Udo's Oil, and annoy my sunbathing friends who have premature wrinkles.

The heat in Guangzhou is too much, I only go out when necessary.

But I live by the Pearl River and get the sun all day so I use Pola, Southern Call Act with SPF30.

Otherwise Kanebo, Sun proguard SPF112.

Both are made in Japan and very good, none of that "lard" effect.

I am sure it is widely available in HK, especially in big stores.

tanned or pale makes no difference as long as your skin is healthy and you take care of it. Wear a hat and I would recommend clarin's SPF40, it has minerals and non-greasy.

use the puiz buin range on suncreams...they have special sensitive ones too.

Im caucasian and now olive skinned...ive never really sunbathed too much and never used anything below a 20 factor. I always come back from my hols close to black...i dont plan this it just happens when i sightsee.

If i didnt use a factor i would burn.

Sure way to know you've damaged your skin is when it burns or blisters and then a week or so later it peels off.

Over the years i have always been the girl with high sun factors and always the one with the nicest even tan...my friends always chose lower factors as they found it hard to tan.

A tan can look lovely...pale skin can too. I can look great in the summer in a pretty white frock and a nice even tone ...legs look more toned up than if i had the blue white tone that they are in the winter.

So yes girls be white but dont show off the legs...cos regardless of what anyone says blue / white legs look absolutely disgusting ...regardless of their size or shape. And at the other end of the scale ....black overtanned legs look terribly false too.

I think the moto needs to be go with anything that makes u look your best....you are the best person to judge that!
