Teats

Dear all,

When do babies start using teats? In a way they help stop baby from crying. Some people told me that babies tend to rely on the teats and sucking too much will affect the shape of the lips (become protruding?!). Is that true?

Hi Nicher --I'm assuming you mean pacifiers/dummies...? If so, my LO was using one at 1 month (against my wishes initially), but it did help getting him to sleep. We didn't give it to him at any other time other than bedtime/naptime. At 6 months, he just refused to have one and would just spit out, luckily for us. His teeth are fine and so is the shape of his lips. :) I think it might affect the teeth or the shape of the lips only if it's used constantly and for an extended period of time. Why don't you check with a pedia just to be sure?

Do you mean dummies/pacifiers?. If you really want to use them, you can start using them from birth. All babies are different with them. Some take to them straight away, some take time to get used to them and some babies just refuse them, like my 2. So I never used them.

It all depends on how hard the baby sucks on them and for how long in months and years if its going to damage the teeth or not. Once all the babies teeth come through and they have a really hard suck the dummy can give the baby/child an 'open bite'. Both the upper and lower teeth protrude usually. Sometimes its a really hard habit to break. If the child is still using the dummy once they start to get their perminant teeth you may have to take them along to see the Orthodontist for expensive treatment. Open bites are quite difficult to treat Orthodontically. Saying all that some kids teeth are not affected by using the dummy at all. I was told using a dummy helps with colic thats why I tried a dummy with my two.

Thank you very much for your advice :) I am just planning what I should get before baby's arrival. So how many dummies/ pacifiers would you need for a newborn? And what brand would you advise?

We used NUK --and started with just 2 (when we were home most of the time in the first few weeks), but later on bought 2 more as we were taking him out more. I think part of the reason why my son spat out his dummy at 6 months was that we switched brands (and size) on him. I got him an Avent, as I didn't have time to go back to the other store where I got the NUK dummy from and we were flying the next day. Blessing in disguise.

i used avent at about 1 month but he has never taken to it, spits it out very qucikly after giving it a quick suckle. but i still take it out with me everytime just in case nothing else helps to calm him down if he gets fussy!! he prefers his thumb.
