this is driving me mad! i keep my music on expternam harddrive and then copy them over to itunes to update my ipod - however it shows an exclaimation mark next to most of the songs (cause I opened itumes without connecting the harddriver i think) and now it will only copy the music to my ipod if i play the tune using itumes - if my hard drive isnt connected it says that it cant access the file.....any ideas how i can delete all the excl marks in one go so it iwll copy over to ipod without having to go thru each song individually?

The exclamation mark means that iTunes can't find the file anymore. It's probably because your computer has given a new drive letter to the external drive. It's all fine as long as you don't want to play the file, edit the name or anything, the music will still be there on your ipod.
If you want to play music with iTunes, then I suggest you either re-copy everything (which will work until windows reassigns the drive letter again) or enable the option in edit, preferences, advanced, "Copy files to itunes music folder when adding to library".
You will have two copies of your music (or think of it as a backup) but the problem won't re-occour. As far as I know there is no way to prevent windows reassigning drive letters as it pleases on external drives.

Try connecting your external hard drive first (make sure it uses the same drive letter), then open iTunes. All the exclaimation marks should be gone. The exclaimation mark problem usually only occurs if you start iTunes without the external hard drive connected.
