Hi MM i found getting the tempture right to be really dificult, i tried so many different combinations of clothes, sheets, aircon and the fan. SIDS reommends not to have bubs to hot i would want her to be warm to touch not hot, Babies a very hot little things anyway i reckon so maybe if the cloth you are swaddleing her in is thickish dress her in something lighter or vice versa. I had C dressed in a short arms, short leg suit and swaddled with a very thin cotton swaddle all most like cheese cloth. And a cotton sheet, and a waffle blanket. The aircon was on 25 and the fan high. Her room is quite small and after awhile i took the blanket off. Now she sleeps in a jumpsuit and the aircon is on 26 the fan high and no sheets or blankets.

I found the best swaddling material to be the cheap made-in-India or Indonesia sarongs that are sold on the beach. It's very light but large enough to do a double swaddle. Also, I would lower the temperature in your room. On the other hand, if your child is not waking up during the night and not sweating, then I would not change things too much.

thanks all. i lowered the temp in the room and the baby is not red anymore. 19-20℃ seems good.

the book i have says the right temprature is 18℃. it seems rather low. since we are in a hot country, should we set air con at a higher temp??? i ordered swaddle grobags and waiting for them to arrive. seems quite good on the web as it is cotton and would be thinnrt than what i use now bt gives good swaddle as well/.

18 would be too low MM. We have a large bedroom and we have the temp at 24, hubby and i sleep with a sheet and quilt. i read for babies at least 24 but again depends on the size of your daughters room and what she's dressed in to sleep.

Grobags are excellent. I've used them for both of my kids and my youngest is now 18 mths and still uses them. In fact, we have just bought her new ones for 18-36 mths which she will probably go into over the next month or two. We live in Singapore and the grobags come with a carboard thermometer that you place in the child's room. It explains room temps best for using whichever tog (ie. thickness) grobag etc. It is a general guide but because some babies are hotter than others, just adjust accordingly but probably start off with the guide (or maybe a couple of degrees higher as 18-20 seems quite cool). I personally used around 21-22 when we lived in Tokyo (but that was ducted air-con and there was carpet in the rooms which makes a difference too). Here in Singapore we have just the separate wall cooling air-cons in each room. Both kids are in 24 degrees now but it's very comfortable (as there are timber floors, not carpet). My kids have always slept well using grobags. Just take everything into consideration (ie. carpets/hardfloors, bedroom door open or closed, child in long sleeves/short sleeves, long pants/shorties etc.) A suggestion might be to go into their rooms around 10.00pm after they've been asleep for a few hours and just stand in there for a minute or so and really 'feel' the room and usually you can easily tell if it's slightly cool or slight warm and adjust. Hope this helps.

i am now keeping the room at around 24 but v difficult to maintain. but i suppose 1 to 2 degree of fluctuation is acceptable.

Always just remember a little cool is much better than too warm.

Koreans and their old wives tales believe that a WARM baby (sweating and stuff) is really good - and I had to do some extensive research into this because my grandmother was yelling at me that the room was too cold for my child. All the resources that I checked recommended temps between 18-22 and my grandmother wanted the room closer to 26 or something. With swaddling, I am of the opinion that the cooler room is much better. Babies are mini heaters (try carrying one when it's hot outside) and have to agree with Teejay that cooler is better. Swaddling, grobags, and all this stuff is just adding layers of warmth that will just cause you baby to sweat.

sweating is bad, right? but i don't believe in too cold either.
we have the aircon for nighttime and bub's room about 21-24 degree celcius. he sleeps in a 1.0tog grobag (which is the recommended tog for that temperature range). i would prefer him to sleep without the a/c but the mozzies will chew him alive!
for day time, the room is around 27 degree celcius. it is definitely not cool but he isn't sweating either. i find that a little warm (not over-heating though) helps MY baby to sleep better, makes him drowsy. but his door is always open and i always pop him to check on him to make sure he is not too hot.
note: he is 5 months old though, perhaps younger babies will need a cooler room.

My 3-week-old sleeps in a short-sleeve onesie, swaddled in a jersey wrap and under a waffle blanket. The room is 25 degrees and he seems ok even though personally, I find it on the cooler side.
