Could anyone suggest where I can find quality fabrics (silk satins, silk chiffons, and other natural fibres) for fashion?
I like to get my clothing made by a dressmaker but I find that the fabrics in teh Chinese dept stores aren't very fashionable and limited in selection.

You could try the upper floor of Western Market which is occupied only by material shops, or another option would be the material shops in Li Yuen Street East (or West?) in Central.

Yes I tried those places but the quality wasn't good

Sham Shiu Po has fabrics but not very high quality and rarely any silk
Those vendors cater to manufactuers in China so they tend to only deal in mass market quality fabrics

Your yardstick of 'quality' is clearly different to mine! Perhaps go to one of the haute couture places and ask them where they source their material. I've used Western Market several times and have never been diappointed with the quality of the material that I select.

Yes tried them both Yue Hwa and Chinese Arts and Crafts but the designs were quite limited
Actually I've found a few online fabric suppliers on the net based in the US that were quite good. The US still have one of th best selection of fabrics and trims for home sewers

Few people in HK are home sewers. Folks just pop over the border and get things made there. A (local) colleague just had two pairs of trousers and a dress made for $250, material included. Not silk but go for everyday wear and perfect fit after only one set of measurements.
I know of a couple of other places for silk in HK but I deleted them as one never knows what Ed will allow.
As the quality of HK fabrics is not up to par perhaps your best bet is to go online to buy.

So grateful for online shopping these days b/c I find that the US..being such an affluent and large scale market still offers the widest selecton at competitive prices.
I'm in the sourcing and manufacturing business and my clients in the US think its so funny when I ask them to buy certain materials in the US to send to us to have made into samples in china. Even though the materials they are sending to me are orignally produced in China!
Just very difficult to procure many high quality items in smaller quantities here

ok i'm new to townbut have found the most fantastic shop for designer fabric. They stock armani, issy and channel. So forgive my vauge directions but i think this shop is worth the hunt. ok the street we are after is queens road and this shop is in centralbut at the sheung wan end between wellington and ladder street. It is a 2 story shopand has a display of not so nice cotton in the window. You need to head upstairs and....... enjoy
