HKG to NY is a premium route with not enough flights hence the high fares and low number of seats. You really do need to book way in advance, good luck.

well now is August already so due to demand and supply, of course you have to sacrific and pay more for your last minute trip. I did try this local agent www.flights.com.hk and they generally have flights which appeared on its website. Good luck.

I am also totally baffled. Yes, you want to fly at peak season on short notice, but there are plenty of seats in economy if you are willing to connect via any number of cities. You can even backtrack to Singapore or Bangkok and catch the nonstop flights from there, or fly nonstop to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seoul, or Tokyo and catch a flight from there.

green, that nicer way sucks on the return because the plane stops in vancouver at 2am. If you end destination is not NYC but another east coast destination, then it is faster (distance and time wise) to fly into Chicago. If you want your airmiles, then going through Los Angeles or San Francisco will do the trick.
