Dropping a feed and adding an extra meal

I was interested in hearing from mums who started there bubs on soilds at 6mths. I am interested to know when your bubs dropped a BM/bottle feed (how long after you started them on solids) and also How long after the first solids meal was it before you introduced a second solids meal?

My bubs has will drink her whole bottle 240ml of BM at 12pm then eat 4 tablespoons of solids and still want more. Its my understanding that solids is not suppose to replace a bottle but it seems that this does happen.

She will still drink the whole bottle at her next feeds at 4pm and 7pm infact she gussles them down.

hi P,

i think when to eliminate milk feeds might be subjected to your bub's needs, regular milk intake, and how/when you plan to introduce more meals to her diet. for example, my bub (5 months) takes very little milk, which is why i have to introduce solids but even then, i am not in a hurry to reduce his feeds because i want him to maintain the milk intake (which from what i read is already the min. intake a bub on solids should take).

i know what i say above probably doesn't help, hope someone else advises soon perhaps the best person to check with is your bub's PD?

good luck!

I started my baby on solids when she was about 5.5 months. She was drinking 7oz (formula) 4 times a day (total 28oz). I did not realise that once I started her on solids, I was supposed to reduce the milk intake until I went for her 6 month check-up with the doc a few days ago. She is a bit overweight, and the doc said I should have reduced the milk to 6oz 4 times a day (total 24oz). Apparently they do not drop a feed until around 7 - 9 months (according to the doc). So by somewhere between 7 - 9 months they should be on 6oz 3 times a day (total 18oz). I started my baby on one meal and then increased to 2 meals after two weeks. However, I do not give her much about 2 tablespoons each meal. I am slowly increasing the amount now that I have cut back on the milk. The doc thought I had increased to two meals a day too quickly but I told him that I don't give much each time. Anyway, I think best to take it slow and go according to your baby's appetite and weight gain.

tks Janey88 my little one still isn't crawling let so i am a little worried aobut her food and milk intake. I will ask the PD in a couple of weeks when i have an appointment but i was interested in hearing from other mums as well. It was my understanding that solids was not to replace a milk feed.

if you are really worried, you can always just call the clinic and ask the PD to call you back when he/she is free. that's what my PD did today when i called to ask about the suitability of certain rice cereals.

my bub goes to singapore baby and child clinic and i was give a very handy a4 sized (2 sides) print out on solids done up by the clinic. not sure which clinic your bub goes to but you can try asking the clinic if they have something useful like that?

Hi Perthites -

sent you a PM. Solids don't replace a milk feed INITIALLY. Until your baby takes about two good meals a day, you dont' replace any amount of milk with food. With Emily, I noticed her doing it on her own - reducing her milk intake and it was gradual - but by 8 months, she had dropped her one feed. Each baby is different and since you know your baby you will instinctively know what to do. I hadn't read THAT much on baby weaning with my first and things just seemed to fall in place naturally. As I added more foods, and more volume she just naturally took less milk in and then soon she wouldn't look for the milk at one of her feeds.

hkchoichoi, which milk feed did Emily drop? I expect that mine would drop her 4pm feed as she has her other milk feed BEFORE her solids meal.

Is it ok to be giving her 4 tablespoons at lunch when she isn't moving so much or as you say can i increase the volume?

Hi Perthites-

when did you start food? How many weeks has it been? What has she had so far? How does she like it? Have you noticed her reducing her milk intake?

the first feed that Emily dropped was her 2:30 feed. At this time she was having a breakfast, lunch and dinner before she dropped it. So after her lunch, she had a nap, and woke up at 2:30 and went straight until 5:00 for her meal. Then after her meal she had her bath and then a b-feed before bedtime. So she was having AM breastfeed, then meal, Lunch, breastfeed nap, and then Meal and breastfeed and down for the night. Does that make sense?

Yes it makes sense thanks but can i just ask in regards to the 2.30 feed that Emily dropped, so she just showed no interest in bing hungry at that time so that's why you could drop it? We started two weeks ago, she started to leave a lot of milk at each feed so i thought i couldn't wait any longer to start solids..thought she must have been bored of just milk. Started on rice cereal, then sweet pot, banana which she didn't like and am about to move on to avo. She has a bottle at 8am, 11.45pm, 4pm, and 7pm we run as close to a 4hr routine as possible. I give her her whole bottle (11.45am) before her soilds meal(12pm) as if i do it this way she will drink it all then have all her soilds 3-4 tablespoons, if i split the bottle she won't drink much after her soilds. I'd prefer if she drank that one bottle and dropped the 4pm as then she shouldn't be hungry as i would be introducing another soilds meal around that time later.

She really enjoys her food it takes some time as she likes to feed herself which i'm ok with she has to learn at some point, she is pretty good actually.

I haven't noticed any lack of interest in her milk in fact if anything she seems hungrier but i thought it might be too soon to introduce a second soilds meal what do you think?

so Cara your saying that i shouldn't drop the 4pm bottle and give her solids instead as it's too long??? it would be around the same time as she wouldv'e had her bottle.

She has a bottle at 11.45 then straight after solids so she doesn't finish bottle and meal until around 12.30-1pm then the next meal (if bottle was dropped would be 4-5pm.

not sure if it's too much but my 6 month old (who has been eating for almost 6 weeks) has :

6:30 breast milk

7:30 2 tbsp cereal

10:00 2 oz of water (after waking up from sleep)

11:30 4 tbps vegetable

2:30 breast (after waking up from sleep)

4:00 2 oz water (or I also boil 4 prunes with 4 cups of water, strain the water, than dilute it again 1/3 prune water - 2/3 boiled water) Not really juice but flavored water with some other benefits!

5:00pm 3 tbsp fruit + 1 tsbp rice cereal mixed

6:30 7 oz formula

11:00 breast

He seems happy with all that. Mind you he is a very tall, solid boy so he has room for it.

Since starting solids, I have dropped the 10:00am feed. Also, he had an early 5:00am feed that I have dropped. Like I said, he was a big boy with a big hunger. Glad the solids are filling him up.

The next feed I will drop will be the 11:00pm but I will wait until he sleeps solidly thru the night. I plan on doing it over 1 month, waking him up earlier for it and giving him less, (1 week, at 10:45, 1 week at 10:30, 1 week at 10:00 and finally, the last week, only a bit at 9:30.

I am hoping that by 7.5 months, I will have a baby who sleeps soundly 7pm-7am. Keeping my fingers crossed.

tks for your response crji as my bubs has been sleeping thru the night fro some while her last bottle is at 7pm. Your timing is quite differnt to mine but i was thinking to split the 4pm feed and add in some soilds just want don't want to disrupt the 7pm. I suppose i could give it a go and if she doesn't want her 7pm bottle i'll no it's too early to intoduce the later soilds meal.

Thankfully our bubs has been sleeping thru the night since about 6-8 weeks so am keen to keep it up.

Good luck for your trial period, you won't know your slef when you get a straight 7hrs sleep yourself!

Our boy started solids at 5 months, and is now 7 months.

We are on three meals a day, plus all the breast feeds.

I am looking forward to dropping a breast feed too, but he still goes for it (although there was a while back when he didn't seem keen that wound up to be just a phase)

6:30 - breast

10:00 - breast and solids (fruit, grain, breast milk - eg. papaya, oatmeal, bm)

1:30 - breast and solids (veg/fruit and breast milk - eg avocado, bm)

5:00 - breast and solids (veg and breast milk - eg. pumpkin, bm)

7:00 - breast

10:00 - breast

I am going to introduce yogurt soon and start adding some tofu to the evening meal every other day.

Each meal he chows down about 150 ML of food - sometimes more if we made more. But he still feeds 10 minutes or so (average for him) on the breast before each meal.

crj what was the time span in between introducing the 2nd and 3rd soild meals? And which BF are you planning on dropping. Did your son give you any indicators that you reckonised as him wanting more food before you intorduced the 2nd or 3rd soilds meal or did you just introduce them?

Hi P -

He is a really good eater, and since he was gobbling down his one meal, it made sense to add a second, then a third. We just figured we would try, and if he didn't go for it, we would wait another week and try again - but go for it he did, and with gusto!

I introduced the second meal after about a month, and to be honest, I probably could have introduced the third meal after about 6 weeks, but I waited until after we returned from an overseas trip.

He has taken to solids so well, we joke that we could pretty much offer them anytime and he will open his mouth and eat it all. (which is ironic for the baby who never stays at the breast long and hovers at the 10%...)

The only time he did not eat well is when we were overseas - he ate only around 100ml rather than his usual 150+, I think it was due to jet lag.

We started with the 10am, then added 5pm, then 1:30 pm. When we introduce new foods it is always at the 10am.

Ideally, I would like to drop the 10am, but I think the 1:30 is more likely to be dropped first - no idea really though, just have to wait and see.
