First you must carry out the following prevention activities:
1. Buy grating guards (or use fine wire mesh) to cover all grates in the flat. This will prevent entrance and exit.
2. Check all cupboards (particularly around sink areas) for holes. If you have, these must be blocked up.
3. Buy sink draining filters, that fit over the drain holes of sinks, baths and taps.
4. Do not open windows wide at night, as they can fly in through the windows of your flat in some densely populated areas. If you like to have your windows open, put up nets to all windows.
Finally, ensure that NO itmes of food (wet or dry) are left lying around (make sure you have at last one cupboard that you can store all your items of food that has tight fitting dorrs and no large gaps.
5. Place traps all around the flat
6. Ensure that if you use a comunnal dustbin outside your flat, that the lid is always kept on it and not left open.
Once all the above have been done fumigate the flat and do not walk into the flat (or allow others) with shoes that have beeb worn in the street.
If you find a cokroach appears, suck it up in the vacuum cleaner quickly and then dispose of the bag afterwards. If you hit the c*ckroaches, you can rupture them and if they are female it is possible for their eggs to be released and spread around your flat.
Take all the above precaustions and your will be c*ckroach free.

I find using the 'Roach Motels' over a period of time (until you stop trapping them, really) works like a charm. Had an infestation in DB.

If it makes you feel any better, roaches are not a reflection of your home/cleaniness. They could be the previous tenants or come from a neighbour (i.e. they could be looking for a new home because their current home is full).
Citysuper has some one-way drain guards for floor drains.
You can also look at Biokill which is a non-toxic surface spray for crack and crevices.
Alternatively, try catnip - dried (rub it between fingers to activate) or spray.

We use Biocycle and have them come to the house and spray - very effective and eco-friendly and safe for babies/pets/etc...

Some sticky roach traps caught three huge buggers over the past two weeks. Agree with the food issue. Keep your food in the fridge. Had a seal heavy duty plastic bag of raisins and the roaches ate through the plastic like it was cheese. Not only is your food ruined, it becomes a source of sustenance for the buggers. Yuck!
