I've recently moved to HK and my computer (desktop) was dissembled and moved here. I assembled it over this weekend, but when I tried booting up it gave me an error that says "Disk-read error, press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart", and the error repeats when i restart.
I opened up the CPU and checked the data & power connections to the hard disk, they seem fine - any other ideas on how to tackle this? I think something must have shifted/come loose in the moving, but I'm not sure what to look at.
All help appreciated, thanks!

Try un-plugging then re-plugging in all of the various connections to help insure that all of the connections are seated properly.
Also, double-check to make sure you're plugging the Hard-Disk ribbon (on both ends) into the correct places.
If you still get the error messages, then perhaps there's a chance that the Hard-Disk itself was physically damaged somehow during the move and parhaps has become unreadable in it's current state now.
You can try getting a new Hard-Drive, and connect it the same way and see if the same problem occurs. If however the new Hard-Drive is seen by your computer, you could then install Windows (or whatever operating system you have) on it. Then afterwards when the OS is installed on your new Hard-Drive, you could try setting the old Hard-Drive as a "Slave Drive" (check for the jumper pins setting on the HD), that way, you might still be able to read your old hard-drive and copy over any important files onto your new HD.
Don't know if any of this makes sense to you, but if so it's worth a try.
You might need to end up getting tech-support to get it fixed if the problem persists.
If it's a PC running a Windows based OS, then I sometimes do some freelance tech-support (I have training and experience as a Computer-Tech) and could possibly come and take a look at it for you. But without knowing what the problem really is at this point, or if it is indeed a hardware problem (such as the Hard-Drive being physically damaged), then there's no guarantee that I could fix the problem with your current Hard-Drive.
If you still needed some help later and wanted someone to come look at your computer for you, then feel welcome to contact me and we could work out the details:

I'm afraid my floppy drive doesn't work... and HD is NTFS formatted... I do have a bootable CD though, I'll try booting from that tonight.
Thanks for all the suggestions, I hope something works!
