Hi, looking to buy a cute or whimsical rug for our baby's nursery. It's a boy, but even a nice plain rug is hard to find here. Suggestions welcomed.

Not cute or whimsical, but we picked out a nice plush wool carpet from a carpet store and had it cut and bound to fit her room. Sounds boring maybe, but it's been great, and better quality then the kiddie ones around. Since the rug was plain, we ended out dressing up her nursery with a wallpaper border and some cotton lantern thingys hanging from the ceiling.

No worries! I was also going to ask where the shops were as well.

We got the border at Jacadi (Prince's building)...ordered from the catalogue and they said something crazy like 2 months, but luckily it came in a week--just a day or so before our baby came :-). (Avant Garde in Pacific Place has some children's borders too.)
We checked out all the carpet places we felt like walking to in Wanchai one afternoon, and ended out with one from a shop sort of diagonally across from Hopewell Center. But there are lots of carpet stores in Wanchai, it's more a matter of finding the color and plushness you like. My husband actually pushed for the better grade carpet which ended out being a good decision, we spend a lot of time playing on her floor. Plus, it was a cushy place for her to practice walking.
Have fun getting ready for baby :-)

I was thinking of using carpet/rug but am concerned about the pollution in GZ might get 'stuck' in it! Fact or myth?

Hi, I didn't want to get a really thick rug, but one to cover the center/middle of the nursery. One, to muffle sounds, and two, for the little one to be able to later crawl on. I think that the pollution here is just inescapable no matter what. :( We had an aircon guy here last week, and you should have seen the gunk that was in there, disgusting! And we're breathing it in...

On the pollution question alvineki--we keep a HEPA filter airclearner near her bed (one in all rooms actually) and vaccume daily. I don't know if there's anything problematic "in" the rug, but none of us is evidencing any repiratory sensitivities so I guess what we're doing is working for us. It's hard to know, the general pollution levels are horrific.
If your child is asmatic though, I think the advice is to eliminate all rugs, decorative pillows, stuffed animals, etc.

We use an IKEA rug, that fits in the washing machine... just fits if you jam it in... cheap and easy to clean.
