Hi,

We are plannng to fly from China to NZ for Xmas, and our son will then be 13 months, and this will involve at least one long haul overnight flight.

When he was eight months we flew to Fiji and he just fitted into the bassinette (he was 73cm and the bassinette was 75cm long). As he will probably be too long to sleep in a bassinette and our carseat is too big for an economy sized seat, what can we do practically ie if we book him a seat, what is the best way to put him "to bed", or should he just go to sleep on top of one of us?

Any advice appreciated.

I flew with Eva airline to Hawaii and their bassinet had a maximum of 14KG so our son was allowed to sleep on it :) You can ask the airline what the weight restriction is. Our son at that time was 17 months old.

Now that he is older he sleeps on my shoulder.. I had a 9 hour flight without my husband which went off pretty well considering he was sleeping most of the time but when it was time to use the potty I gently put him on the seat and asked the gentleman next to me to keep an eye on him.

I think it mostly depends on where he WILL sleep. At that age, mine slept very happily in my arms, now (3 yrs) forget it. If you're flying economy and he has his own seat (and you don't have the bulkhead row where this wouldn't work) you could try lifting the armrest between your seat and his, and making him a little bed that includes your lap as a pillow.

Now mine doesn't sleep on planes at all. Barely a wink, even on super long hauls, even on night flights. I'm seriously thinking of making her a bed on the floor next time, laying down tons of blankets. Or trying to get an empty row on an empty flight...

Anyway, good luck. NZ will be lovely.

we just returned from a trip to Europe with our 13 months. We bought him his own seat as he was too big for the bassinet and took the carseat along. The carseat fitted perfectly into the seat and it's the most secure way of flying for small children. He slept for 10 hrs. Our seat can be reclined within its plastic shell making it even more comfy. It's pricey because you have to pay 50% of the normal ticket price plus tax, fuel surcharge etc. but it was definitely worthwhile for us.

i would second the car seat option. failing that a seat next to you or let him sleep on you. definately would avoid letting children sleep on the floor. this used to be common practice a few years ago but the airlines will not allow it now. this is due to accidents during turbulance. it's a real danger so i would advise against it.

good luck with the flights everyone. i travelled back on my own this time from uk with 3 kids, aged 3, 7 and 8 and can honestly say it was my best flight ever. it gets better and our kids become wonderful fliers!
