Mothers!! I need help! my son who is 18 month old just refuses to let me brush his teeth. it's such a struggle every night and it often ends up with him crying on the floor. i have tried everything to brushing my teeth with him, buying him colourful tooth brushes, distracting him....practically everything that i can find in the book. now i am getting desperate because i noticed he starts to get bad breath in the morning. he has 14 teeth now and there are still more popping out. help!!!

at 18 months, it's kind of tricky b/c they are starting to have a mind of their own, but really don't know what they want or really doing.
Maybe it's a little young for some kids for actual brushing, what I did (old advice from grandmas and other moms)..... take a towel/cotton pad, and just brush his teeth with your fingers.
However, it's not the ideal way, I know. But at this age, they like to copy you. You might want to let him watch you brush together, and give him drinkable water to do it b/c they can't spit yet. I also bought the safe to swallow toothpaste, it's so yummy, my daughter always ask us to brush teeth when she was that age.
Good luck.

Thanks, Ruth. Have read through it and there might be something there that I can use. Katetam, that's why I did too, wrapping the Suzuran wet cleaning cotton around my finger and clean his teeth. But with 14 teeth to clean, it's like putting my hand into an alligator's mouth. I got bitten so many times by him and it hurts, no joke!

Perhaps his gums are a bit tender. Have you tried a cotton wool bud? At least it would save your fingers and get him used to the idea of a toothbrush.

no, i haven't try cotton wool bud. the problem is that he refuses to open his mouth, and when he does, he bits anything that goes into his mouth. i was afraid that he might dislodge the cotton wool from the stick and swallow it.

I wonder if Spiffies Tooth Wipes are available in Hong Kong. They come in flavours like apple and mango which might encourage him to open his mouth.

i will be very grateful if you can tell me where to find them.
