hi, i'm a new mom with a 5mths boy, wondering whether we should give juice or rice cereal first when starting solids? and does anyone make their own juice? it sounds silly but how do you make juice for baby considering that they drink so little?

check with your boy's PD on what first foods he/she recommends to start off with. most people start with baby rice before moving on to veg/fruit purees.
i am sure someone else will correct me if i am wrong about this, but at this stage, juice isn't that necessary? i think when you introduce more solids, you can offer your bub some cooled boiled water or diluted juice during mealtimes to prevent constipation, etc.
yes, people make their own juices for babies!

Start with rice cereal and give your son some water to help flush his kindneys now that he has moved on the soilds someone else posted this website which i great and will explain things more clearly.

I start my boy with vegetable, boil it a little, not too over cook cause all the vitman willl be gone, use a blender and mix with some water to start with. You should start with one vegetable at a time and try something new few days later. My boy just love all my home made baby food and won't eat preserve at all. Of cause, I do fresh juice by myself too.

i was told by my friend that when you start solid you should always start with something bland first like cereal and leave the sweet stuff for later. the reason being that once the baby has tasted sweet stuff ( juice and fruits ), she wouldn't want anything that is bland (cereal, potato etc ). i think there are some truth in this.

Your questions are valid. My intention is not to take over this thread with advertising, but you might be interested in knowing that I am teaching a course on healthy cooking for infants at the YWCA (English members department) in November.
I am a mother of two and a passionate cook and believe that good dietary habits start from when solids are started.
Have a look at this website or if you have any questions you can send me a PM.

Hi Taurus-
good questions. This topic has been up recently and has generated lots of discussion on other threads. I've pasted them here - a lot of the advice is very very good, and the moms on here generally research and are thoughtful in the way they want to feed their kids - but I do think a consult with your Pediatrician isn't a horrible idea either.

try these threads out - lots of discussion and information.
furthermore - this is additional information about the juice in a baby's diet. There is new research (still in the works) which seem to indicate that it isn't beneficial for young children and even toddlers to have too much juice. (if they have, diluting it and limiting intake is very important.)

One other thing to consider. Babies need Iron. It is very hard to get in their diet as they don't eat too much red meat in the early years. Iron fortified baby ceral is highly recommend by Drs through 18 to 24 months.
Avoid juice all together. They don't need it, even diluted. It is just sugar water, even if it is natural. Give them a piece of fruit instead.

Rice cereal seems to have less allergic effect than juice. Rice water can be the first food for trial. It can be frozen as ice cube for the next use. Semi-solid or pureed foods are fine too. Gradually increase food consistency and variety as the infant gets older.
