I have to give formula every now and then after BM but it is v difficult to predict how much my baby wants (i.e. how much BM she had). Can I mix some formula in a steralized tapperware and keep in the fridge for about 5 hours? Then i can take out what is necessary each time to a feeding bottle, warm up and use? I don't intend to reheat it.

NO NO NO NO NO....

the most recent advice on formula milk is to make a fresh feed everytime. before, people would make a batch of feeds (into the feeding bottles) and store in the fridge for up to 24hours but that is apparently not too safe.

it is not difficult to make up formula feeds. my bub has been on formula for many months. what i do every morning is sterilise the bottles and then pour freshly boiled water into the bottles and add the powder only when i need to feed. i feed my bub room temperature milk but if you want to feed something warmer, you can do the same but fill bottle up with one ounce less and then top up with freshly boiled water when you actually make up the feed.

avent does 4 ounce bottles, you can use that if you don't want to make a big feed everytime.

The formula instruction always tells you to mix the powder at 50-60 degree...is it ok to mix when the water is completely cooled down?

Agree with Wheelymate, PLEASE do not premake formula for your baby. Any unused formula should be discarded within 1 hour. So think about that!

Bacteria can grow in premade formula. It's so easy to mix the formula.

What you can do is (for faster process of mixing).

Have the bottles sterilized, then when you need the formula, you measure the right amount of cooled boiled water, then if you want the formula to be hotter (I keep hot water in a thermos), make it to the right temperature, then add the right amount of formula powder. You can pre-measure the powder in a formula box so you can just pour the whole thing in when you need it. I get lazy at night (1:00am feed), so all this is in my bedroom when I need it.

Good luck.

With my eldest 2 I used to make up a days feeds and keep them in the fridge, for up to 24 hours. With the others, I used to have a separate jug that I filled each day with boiled water, and made up the bottles when needed. When I was going out, I did the same as wheelymate and filled the bottles with the water ready, and carried the premeasured powder in a small container to add when neccessary. It mixes fine when the waters not hot. I always fed my babies their milk and food at room temperature, so that I didn't have to worry about heating it went out and about.

ok, the instructions on the tin would usually state some preferred temperature but it really depends on your bub and the temperature your water is exposed to. singapore is pretty warm so water will be lukewarm outside - i find that it mixes just fine with formula and then. of course you don't want anything too chilled either but if your bub doesn't need warm milk, makes things easier when you go out, no need to bring hot flask or anything! if you want it warm, just have a combi of cooled boiled water and hot water ready to mix in order to achieve the right temperature.

katetam's suggestion for pre-measure boxes is great, especially when you do night feeds. i used to have the pre-measured formula, a hot flask, bottles in my room so i didn't have to go to the kitchen to prepare...keeps you drowsy enough to fall asleep quickly again after your bub is done with milk!

good luck!

My sister tells me there is this hot water maker especially designed for formula which would constantly boil water to steralize and then keep the temp at 50-60 for the formula 24hours sold in Japan. I wonder if they sell that in UNY or somewhere....

Thank you all for your suggestions!

I bought an electric thermo/kettle all in one thing at UNY. It boils and keeps the water at 60degree especially designed for formula. Now I don't have to make my bub wait for a long time while I make milk. I BF but supplement if the bub is hungry at the end of feeds, and she cries when I go into the kitchen to make formula... I know it is not a long time but I wanted to keep the crying minimum so this thermo kettle is perfect! My husband takes her into the kitchen when he makes formula but I really didn't want bub in the kitchen with boiling kettle! I have a nice milk station now in the kitchen with 24hur Avent steralizer and this kettle.
