Hi! We've just come from Oz! No... they won't allow you to do so. On take off, she will have to be sitting on your lap, buckled in of course! Throughout the flight if there is no other available seat, she will have to sleep across your two laps. However, if there is a vacant seat next to you, you can "spread out". If there is room, she can sleep on the floor space in front of your seats provided the "fasten your seat belt sign" is off. Enjoy the ride!

i would advise against letting her sleep on the floor. most airlines recommend that we keep our seatbelts fastened even when the seatbelt sign is off. this is due to unexpected turbulance. it really makes me nervous when i see children asleep on the floor. it's hard to get them up into their seats in time if things go wrong...
sorry to be the voice of doom!

I agree with Zalca, I wouldn't make my kid sleep on the floor for a security reason. If a serious turbulence occurs, you just don't have time to do anything...
She'll have to sleep on your lap and if you're lucky to have an unoccupied seat close to you, then you can enjoy it ! The best thing is to ask at the check-in counter, if the flight is not full, they can block that seat for you :-)
Good luck

I flew with Lufthansa (12 hours way) and my baby was eleven months at the time. I had the bassinette as well but I took him out after some time and transfered to the floor. The reason I did it because I was alone with the baby and I was scared that he would wake up and fall out (when I was asleep). The bassinettes are not very high up on the sides and it looked dangerous to me. I had two seats available next to me but didn't let him sleep on the seats as well for the same reason of falling down.
I asked for blankets and cushions and airline staff helped me to build a nice bed (I had bulkhead seat) with a tent on top. Both ways he slept 10 and 11 hours.
I took a large bag with toys along as well but didn't need any of them because he slept the whole time. This only works if you have booked night time flights.

CX is not allowed that anybody sleep on floor for security reasons. But don't get bulk seat which is next to toilets, very noise.
Don't know which flight you taking but let a child walk around before take off(make taired and safety video starts and sit). If you are not going to buy a seat for your 1yr child ,you have to cuddle whole flt unless flight is not full. Good luck from expart traveller with small child.

I like the labour analogy. On my first long-haul to Europe with a baby, I met a Scottish woman living in Western Australia who was travelling with an 8mo-old for 30+hrs visiting the homeland (changing at Perth, Singapore, HKG and LHR) and while my jaw dropped she said, "It's only one day of your life after all, and I was in labour for 48hrs - it can't be as bad as that!"
Agree it's best to get somewhere for your child to sleep when strapped in. I've had some awful flights for turbulence when our baby was in or out of the bassinette every hour. But not everyone can afford to pay for the extra seat or is lucky enough to have an extra seat. It certainly does pay to ask just in case!

We've travelled countless number of times with our baby/toddler between Tokyo - Sydney (and that's a 2 hr drive before you even get to the airport). Seriously, you can stress all you like, but, that will just make you anxious and may transfer those feelings onto your little one and make it harder for them to relax. We've always done the night flight as they sleep most of the way. Sure, it may take 1 - 2 hrs to get them to sleep initially but at the end of the day, you'll be fine. I would definitely advise against them being placed on the floor - no way! I find that at times, depends on if your partner is flying with you or not, that the bulkhead is worse as the armrests do not lift up. Although it is a little more squashy in the usual rows, it's much easier to spread out with the kids because the armrests do go up. Good luck.....and like the others have said, it's only 9 hrs or so - it's not that long a period out of your life. It's just a little inconvenient but we have no choice if we want to go home to see our loved ones. It's worth it.

Oh my God, half your luck (I think!) Try....22hrs, 2.5cm then a c-section!!! ha ha...

Hi, I wouldn't get too stressed about turbulence. We just came from NZ with a two year old and a 8 month old. With Cathay Pacific. They were great, the 8 month old slept on the floor on pillows and blankets for a decent amount of time, but yes you have to pick them up if it gets turbulent. e was okay with that. We brought the car seat and the two year old slept in that.
People get so stressed these days about baby stuff. A large reason why the restrictions are there are because in the unlikely event that something did happen..........the airline wouldn't be able to be sued by you.
The floor at the bulk head is best place if you want them to sleep in peace without waking at every movement you make............but..depends on how full the flight is.
Go with whatever works for you on the flight and don't rule out things as you have to be flexible and stay sane!
Good Luck.

i promise this is my last comment on the subject of letting a baby sleep on the floor... :)
i really wouldn't advise anyone to do this. it's just downright dangerous. we don't always get warning of turbulance whilst on planes. don't take my word for it-do a search on google and see what comes up. i agree- do whatever works for you but don't compromise safety on this issue. it's not a case of getting stressed - it's a case of being sensible with precious cargo :)
the restrictions are there because there have been accidents. that's it. well- at the end of the day you have to make your own decisions about the safety of your children and if you are willing to take that risk...

Expect a bit of crying, you will be surprised how little you care about the other passengers - there are earplugs on board after all..
What is the absolute worst case? That one of you has to walk around holding him all night? At least there are 2 of you to share it.
It will be fine.
#1 Priority: Get to the other end in one piece and with a minimum of stress to yourself (by expecting the worst, you will be pleasantly surprised how well it goes! - works for me!)

I took my baby to Australia when she was about 18 months. It was a horrible flight b/c she's mobile, and and you can't reason with her. We were not given the bulkhead seats as they were "taken" when we checked in .... so we assumed it was by other people with babies. But when we got onto the flight, the people that were sitting in all those bulkhead seats were all single travellers, and couples. No babies. I made a complaint to CX's stewardess, and they agreed that I should get those bulkhead seats, so they asked this couple to move. They kindly did, and understood. I felt bad, but at the same time I needed the bulkhead seats for the extra floor space/leg space. My husband had to put one leg up like a "fence" while my daughter walked back and forth between the three seats we had. She kept crying and crying whenever we didn't let her do what she wanted. She played all the paper cups that were around the 4 washrooms. She tore up 3 discover magazines in about 1 hour.
The flight was 8 and half hours, felt like 28 hours. Anyhow, we survived it, but definitely needed the bulkhead seats.
BUT- I highly highly highly advise you to AVOID letting your child sleep on the floor. It's very dangerous, let alone you have NO IDEA HOW DIRTY the floor of an airplane is.
If you get the bulkhead seats in the middle, it's even worse, I have had people actually walking INTO my seats to get across to the other side when the toilets on one side was occupied. I was appalled, so these people basically stepped on my bags, shoes, and toys that my kids had. I screamed at them and told the stewardess about it. But during the rest of the flights, there were still people who were TRYING to get across the aisles through our seats. I simply said "NO! Go through the KITCHEN!"

Katetam, glad that we are not the only people irritated by that! I could not believe how shocked people were when we asked them not to step on out bags, feet etc. On our flight (CX) one of the stewardesses did it and woke up my son when she hit his head with a bag.

Mrsl, hahaha, I am glad to know I wasn't "crazy" to scream at these "inconsiderate" people. My flight was ALSO CX!!!

why not bring a car seat for her on board? i'm bringing my 5mths boy to sydney in oct and i plan to do that. though it may not be as comfy as sleeping on the floor but definitely a safer option.

We tried taking a car seat onboard but QF doesnt allow it. We had to check it in as luggage. Check with your airline.

In our experience, taking the carseat is down to luck. On CX, we have been allowed to do so on some flights and not on others. We are almost always refused on BA, even though their website clearly states:
"For take-off and landing the children are required to be secured with an extension seat belt or alternatively approved five-point harnessed car seats can be used providing seats have been purchased for the children."
The policy from check-in to boarding the flight has not even been consistent. Obviously we ask at check-in, and once they agree, we take it onboard, where we have more often than not been refused. Gets irritaing after a while.
