Grobag or Miracle Blanket?

ORIGINAL POST

In the last couple of nights, our one-month-old has been waking up cold after escaping from his swaddle.

It looks as though we are going to have to invest in either something like the Miracle Blanket that stops him from escaping, or a Grobag which allows him to stretch... The problem is, I can't tell which he prefers! Any way to tell without buying both products?

We love love love love our Miracle Blanket... Our baby slept beautifully in it until he rolled over at 5.5 months and we stopped.

Now he just sleeps in 'pajamas' - ie, jumpsuit things with feet.

Thanks for the endorsement crj! Do any of the HK shops sell the Miracle Blanket? Or would I have to order it online?

I ordered online, but I saw on another post that Mothercare had it too.

Worth it really... although it does take a few times of practice to get used to using it - it is kind of a complicated straight jacket for babies!

Yesterday bubs had his afternoon nap all splayed out in just his onesie in a non-airconditioned room and slept really well. Is it possible that he prefers being able to stretch out than being swaddled? How can you tell when babies don't actually want to be swaddled anymore?

I bought the miracle blanket in Mothercare too. Costs around $250 or so. The blanket is made with very thin cotton. I wonder if bub would need an extra blanket by the time he comes out (due in Oct and weather will be much cooler)? Or should I dress him with extra clothes underneath the miracle blanket to keep him warm? Any experience to share?

Well, mine never did seem to like being swaddled, she just wouldn't settle (or not so fast) until she is free to stretch. I always found it surprising, but my husband hate not being free of movement, so he always said the she was like him ;-)

So it was grobag for us (or equivalent), but in summer, we also do like crj, just the pajamas with feet.

At night:

0 - 5.5 months - Our baby wore a onesie and the swaddle.

5.5 months - now - Now he wears a onesie and 'pajamas' with feet.

We keep the room 22-24 degrees.

Daytime naps:

First 2 months swaddle

after that, wrapped in a light blanket with one arm out, so he could escape. Or just his onesie.

Neither of my two kids liked being wrapped - always fought their way out, but both loved sleeping bags because had more freedom to move. I love the grobags - they recommend starting when your baby is more than 10lbs/4.5kgs (otherwise you have to buy the newborn bag which only lasts a short while). My son is now 2 and is still in his grobags. He associates them with sleep, and they also stop him climbing out of the cot! I think they were the best money spent for baby products!

Here in HK in summer we do need to air cond his room so he is not too hot in the bag - sleeps like the proverbial baby!

Hi all - what makes grobag so special vs other similar vest-like sleeping bags?

What i like about the grobag is that it zips from top to bottom (i.e. the zipper tag is by the feet) so it doesn't irritate/scratch my baby while sleeping. Plus diaper changing is a breeze as you don't have to unzip all the way. Zippered bags are also nicer as cold air doesn't get through the sides unlike buttoned bags.

What I like is the tog system (this describes the warmth of the sleeping bag) and the room thermometer that comes with the bag. You then know exactly how to dress your baby inside the bag for the room temperature - no risk of them overheating (which is considered a SIDS risk). They are also cottoned lined which is better than synthetic products for babies skin. Than can go in the dryer too!! I tried cheaper sleeping bags with my daughter and was quite happy with them. However once I bought a Grobag I have never gone back to any brand. Once my kids grow out of them I have leant them to friends and after 4-5 kids using them they are still like new. There is an Aust website which explains how the bags work (they sell them) www.bumpto3.com.au
