Can any informed person tell me when did the first works (dredging / land flattening work for Chep Lap Kok begin?) Was it 1990 or 1991?

Reply would be highly appreciated. (Note - I've googled this query but no luck. All sites mention completion date.. but not work initiation date)

How can construction only have begun in 2003 when it had been up and running for several years by then.

The first construction work (as opposed to site investigation, design etc) commenced Jan 1991. This work was 'Airport Advance Works' contract undertaken by Kumagai/HAM/Maeda Joint Venture. The APC JV commenced Dec 1992 this being the 'big' CLK formation contract with the contract award being approx. HK$9,000,000,000! This JV contract lasted aprrox. 2.5 years and shifted 10 tonnes of rock/mud/sh*t PER SECOND and at one stage had 3/4 of the world's dredging fleet on it.

chicken,

My memory is going so I just checked a few facts and:

Originally two islands; CLK (300 hectares, 100m+ high) and Lam Chau at the west end (8 hectares). If you look at where the cable car tower is that is all that remains of the original CLK island as it was, the rest blasted down. And on the original bit ancient civilisation remains were found.

-total size of CLK approx. now 1248 hectares so 900+ hectares is the 'new' bit.

-the existing marine mud & sh*t was removed to give the new a solid base.

-also note 'the brothers', two small islands between CLK and sort of the Gold Coast which had their tops cut off

-dredging took stuff from out in the sea & dumped it. The removed high bits of CLK were also used. And islands in the Pearl River Delta were also quarried for rock.

-how many dolphins were killed? Don't know but standing on CLK during the building pahse I say a pod(?) of about 8 jumping about 100m away. And as a additional bit a young 'great white' was netted late 90's nearby The Brothers islands....
