huang qiang bei is an okay place to go and in the big shops you can pay by credit card.

Go to huang qiang bei then through the Huang gang border. if you wanna go to luo hu then take the train.

Unless you are going to Shenzhen with friends or someone who has been before I would suggest you contact the YWCA or the Australian Association and go with one of their organised groups. You will be shown how to get there, what forms to fill going into China, and coming out again along with tips on how to bargain. The group leader will take you to all areas in the Lowu Commercial Centre so that when you go back alone or with a friend it will not be so overwhelming. I wouldn't suggest going into Shenzhen proper unless you have some friends with you. Enjoy it though, it is a great way to get good stuff at bargain prices.

i'm interested in going too with a friend (visiting from o'seas) but haven't been there before. I had a look at some of the shenzhen shopping tours online. Not very attractive unless you like doing day tours - ie they pickup from lots of hotels (so would take hours to actually get there), they probably have special deals with certain shops (so take you to the high priced/uninteresting shops), then all the waiting for people to return to the meeting point/times, and then the long trip back (again stopping at all the major hotels!). I'm probably being very skeptical!

Always remember to bargain usually 1/4 of the price they quote you. They will mark up the price very high.

turquoiseblue, the YWCA and Aust Assoc do not have any alliance with any of the Traders in Shenzhen nor do they get a 'kickback'. For both organisations it is a day trip, everyone meets at the same place on HK Island usually around 9:30 am and depart Shenzhen around 4:00 for HK. Their charge which is not very much at all goes towards their administration, monthly newsletter costs. The Aust Assoc also organises a bus to take groups from Queen's Pier Central into Shenzhen through another border crossing to a Homewares Centre. 4 buildings of about 3 storey's each selling everything for the home from bathroom fittings to dinner sets. Very different to Lowu, no missie missie, no manicure or Gucci handbags and Rolex watches. More towards the shopping malls we have at home only cheaper but still good quality merchandise. On top of a good shopping day you get to meet new people as well. What more could you ask for?

i meant the commercial tourist companies in regards to kickbacks etc...!

yes would love to use aust assoc or ywca, except they don't do it often enough! my friend's visit to HK unfortunately doesn't coincide with any of the dates offered by aa or ywca.
