But don't they charge a small fee (like 10% or so) for under 2 years old?
Please support our advertisers:
they charge 10% of the PUBLISHED airfare (different from the discounted price most travel agents get you.) Generally I've paid around $700-$1000 HKD for flights for my infant.
Please support our advertisers:
yes as hkchoichoi says they do charge 10% we've travelled 3 times the first when our bubs was 8weeks andqantas and sinapore airlines both charged, not sure about the other airlines.

All correct, and if you purchase heavily discounted adult tickets, the infant ticket can sometimes be more like half the adult price. For example, I'm travelling to the UK with my two children, one baby and one two year old, and the adult fare is HK$4880, child fare 4762, infant fare 2336. The infant ticket probably is 10% of the full ticket price.

Is the 10% charged for ALL babies under 2? Even when they are just a few weeks old?
Please support our advertisers:
Yes, unfortunately it is for all infants under 2. I personally don't understand it when they don't get a seat (when we travelled, I wasn't even able to get a bassinette for my baby), don't get baggage allowance, and often don't even need the food (unless they are on solids).

I paid 10% plus fuel surcharge.
I then got 10kg baggagae allowance, bassinette.
I travelled to Europe and in Asia and they always kept the seat next to me empty so I had extra space. One time the flight was completely full except the two seats next to me. So I guess airline staff try to accomodate parents with small children as best as they can.

Check with the individual airline. Some of them will allow an infant to be carried free of charge, under certain circumstances, e.g. Qantas on domestic flights. It has to accompany (sit in the lap) an paying adult passenger, and there would be no baggage allowance.

dunno about the free of charge but normally the price may range between 10 and 25% of the adult REGULAR price!!
it seems that I was luckier than some of you as I was provided a bassinet for my dd and also 10kg for luggage - which were very useful believe me!!
but every airline has its own rules so better check..
good luck

some budgets airlines maybe cheaper, just nominal fee. i took jetstarasia fr hk to singapore, paid hkd100 each way for my boy, no seat, no bassinet, on my lap all the way. ok for short haul flights

I travelled with my two to the UK (1 and 2 at the time) this summer and as my ticket was so heavily discounted (around 4k with BA) I got the baby a seat for just a few hundred dollars more than the infant fare. So we had plenty of space and masses of baggage allowance for just a little bit more money. Agree the infant fare is very pricey for tiny babies so just make sure you get plenty of help and all the extras from the crew!

exactly, sometimes it makes sense to just buy a seat, especially for long haul, since the airlines will charge all the taxes and fuel surcharges for a baby that weighs next to nothing on paper but feels like a bucket of bricks on your lap.
pokfumum, congrats on traveling by yourself with two infants. that's amazing.

Anyone travelled with CX to Europe with infant (less than 2 years old) recently? How much did you pay? I intend to travel with 11wks old baby this coming Christmas season. Ticket is $8,260 for adult but infant fare unspecified.
Please support our advertisers:
The last time we travelled with CX, we paid the 10% of the adult's full fare. No seats are required, and you may get the infant ticket on day of departure at the check-in counter.

My son has traveled with us a lot since he was 4 weeks. under 2 years of age, we were charged 10% of the poblished rate, at 2 years (where he gets his own seat), we paid 75% of the published rate. This is for most of the big airlines like CX, Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways and Northwest

I called CX customer service this morning and got a cheaper price than the online price for adult at 8519HKD to Paris but drastically, the infant fare for my 10wks old baby is 3562HKD! So that's around 40% of my adult ticket. ooh la la!
Hi Daddy Long Legs,
I was inquiring last night as there is no CX 24 hrs hotline (which they should) and wanted to purchase the adult ticket immediately as ticket prices seems to increase every 12 hours!

Their yield management on pricing are not affecting the infant fare, as infants do not require any seats. Most airlines sell infant ticket on day of departure. It is always 10% of full fare.
The 3562 fare price you are quoted is most probably from the 10% of full fare.
Full fare is very different from the discounted adult fare price. You may clarify with the respective airline.

singapore-mom is right, the listed book price fare is a lot higher than the offer prices that most people pay. But if they are charging that much for no seat its almost worth buying a full child ticket when they're on offer. ANZ were advertising LHR-HK last month for 299 pounds for adults tickets. Oasis is 270pounds.
But fares always go up at christmas.
