When I was new here, I was told that having high tea at the Peninsula was one of the to-dos not to be missed. Nearly two decades later, I want to know: Are the delicate cucumber sandwich, crumpets and potted jam, special Earl Grey, etc. worth the experience?

The Pen high tea has been flooded by tourists (particularly from the Mainland) and now it is necessary to queue. It is not quite the quiet, refined experience you remember. And I feel the Pen has bowed to the pressure of increased numbers and let the service slip from what it once was. Tea bags.. tsk

Thanks. My inlaws are planning to come here for a week. And I know my MIL would love to do high tea. So, where is this Spring Moon, ce? The Terrace sounds like what the Peninsula would have been. Repulse Bay sounds splendid, too; it will depend on what else is on the cards, though.

Agree with Claire. Teabags, never heard of fresh mint tea (teabags again). Have been there about 10 times with houseguests. Each time have promised myself that I will never do it again - once queued for over 90 minutes! For some reason, everyone seems to have their minds set on going, and I cave in. Not sure about the references to Mainlanders, all Americans and Brits whenever I've been.

I did the afternoon tea at the Peninsular about 2 years ago. Our group decided to amke an occasion of it and dressed up, but the dress code was pretty lax compared to how it used to be. Several ladies in our group said that the afternoon tea at the Conrad was much better, but everyone needs to do the Peninsular at least once. It was my first and only time.

Very helpful info, CE. Again, thanks!

High Tea the Peninsula is good, but if allowed, I rather do it during the weekday.
Also I tried their weekday set lunch is not bad as well. Not too pricey from what I remember. Ring them up to check.

I will. But there's still time for that, I'm afraid. My outlaws have tentatively scheduled their trip for October.

Through the HKCVB they offer a tea at the tea house in Hong Kong Park next to the Tea pot museum. It's not high tea but tea training where you sit at a table and are told about the different types of teas and how to perform an authentic asian tea ceremony. Atmosphere, training and tea tasting was really enjoyable. Definitely on my list to take my MIL to when she comes next. I haven't checked yet, but I'm sure mor4e info is available through the Convention authority. They had other types of seminars for visitors as well like tai chi classes, etc. Great ideas.
