We had the same problem. Ended up unplugging the line at night for about 6 months. Almost stopped now, only once or twice a week it happens.

We had the same, turned off the fax months ago. We still get the calls but just put the phone down when we here the beep. We hardly ever use the fax anyway, and if by chance someone legit wants to send a fax they just call first and we turn the fax on.Maybe we should try the above suggestion though.

Call the telephone number (almost always provided if they're trying to sell you something) on the fax and tell the sender that you'll be reporting them to both the OFTA Complaints Section
and the PCCW abuse hotline. Whenever I do this I invariably speak to some girl on the end of the 'phone who, after listening to my snarled threats, apologises profusely and promises to remove my number from their list. While it might not be as satisfying as the above solutions, I don't get repeat faxes from first offenders.
and ask PCCW to put a tracking on your fax number to identify the source of the unwanted messages

Yes, I agree this is most annoying - late night faxes are a good argument against free local calls. I have tried most of the above suggestions, but in the end I still have to pull the phone out of the wall at night!!.
The long reply fax doesn't always work because the operators who presumably send these things automatically, wouldn't be printing out the replies. Calling sometimes works but you will need cantonese. I understand there is now, or soon will be a 'no spam' register here in HK - perhaps the solutions lies with that.

We have a similiar problem but for us the problem is not that the faxes make it through to us (and therefore waste the paper) but that we get the phone calls in the middle of the night with the fax beeps. We have changed our fax setting so that it does not receive faxes automatically. If we get rid of our fax machine will that mean that the phone calls/fax calls will stop? We don't want to have to leave the phone off the hook but that may be the only option.

i used to have the same annoying problem, which also wastes paper and ink. now, i do what raincatcher does, installed a fax program and have all incoming faxes go straight into my computer and only print the ones that i need. works excellently.
